I am new to MA area. What beaches around here are good to hang out? I know the Cape and up North near Gloucester are recommended but exactly where? which exit? I like those soft clean sandy ones, not the muddy private beaches.

hmmm good harbor. take 128 north, not 95, to the end. you'll come to a big rotary. you wanna go straight through the rotary. come to a set of lights. take a left. come to a supermarket on your right, take the right immidiatly after it. down that hill street, left. you'll see good harbor on your right. if your not there by 10am on a weekend the lot will be full and you wont get in. if you can't get in follow that road all the way down and you can get on long beach. cheaper parking and still pretty nice.

Crane's in Ipswich is nice .. 4 plus miles long .. shallow drop off for about a couple hundred yards out so the water stays warm. Plum Island in Newburyport-Newbury-Rowley (maybe goes out to Ipswich can't remember) is about 7 plus miles long 1 mile of which is inhabited the rest of it is a National Seashore and restricted in the summer (forget how many cars they let in before they shut the gates)
Plum Island is a Wild beach .. meaning it's got a steep drop-off and a pretty bad undertow/riptide especially at the Northern End by the mouth of the Merrimac. It's not a good place to swim unless you are a Very Very Good Swimmer. Cranes .. just down the road is much nicer. You don't want to go near any of them at the height of Green Head Season (I think the nasty little fies come out in mid-late July). If you are at all familiar with barrier beaches along the East Coast you'll know what a Green head is. These are nasty big flies that'll take a nice bite out of you and leave you bleeding.
