Disclaimer: All work done is at your own risk. I hold no responsibility to anyone for messing up their car, cutting your arm off, angry wives etc... Results may vary if you use different substitutes for the items listed below.
All the items listed below can be bought at you local Home Depot. Total Cost is about $12.00
The Goods:
Flat 1/8” Thick ¾” x 36” Aluminum

3M double-sided tape
small hacksaw
black paint & primer (not painted in the pictures so you could see it)
razor blade
ruler or tape measure

Let’s Get Started…..
Read the entire instructions and look at your car. If you don’t understand something ASK!
Measure the aluminum bar 20” and mark then cut with hacksaw
Primer and or Paint the 20” aluminum bar black (again the one pictured is not painted so you can see it)
Apply 3M double-sided tape to one side of the painted aluminum piece and trim the excess tape off with a razor.

Installation…Now you can get as anal as you want to measure this too make sure it is in the center of the wind deflector. All you need to do is make sure it’s centered depending on your eyesight you can eyeball it that is what I did. A) I was testing this B)Since it is going to be painted black is anyone really going to notice it? No

The second part of this is getting it to line up with the back edge of the air deflector.
Go out to your car open the sunroof all the way and standing at the side of your car push the air deflector down. Notice where the back of the air deflector sits in front of the lip
In the below picture the air deflector is in the down position as if the sunroof was closed

I removed the protective plastic off of the tape and carefully put the aluminum bar down in the deflector track and lined it up straight with the back edge of the air deflector and then pushed the deflector down to make it stick to the bottom. I then ran my finger along the bottom of the aluminum piece and pressed up to make sure the tape was sticking to bottom of the air deflector.

I tested it to make sure the aluminum bar would not cause the deflector to push up on the sunroof when closed or interfere with the operation of the glass closing. I didn’t have any problems but you should check also.
Your Done!

I have been running this for about two weeks and drove about 300 miles with the sunroof open going max 95mph and no problems.

Comments, Suggestions are welcome. Hope this helps! If I screwed something up let me know and I'll fix it.

I have a cheaper fix...roll down your windows LIKE A MAN or don't open up the sunroof so far. There's a reason it doesn't open all the way without your hand on the switch.
OR......here's an idea........

get a convertible!

It sounds like english, but I didn't understand a word you said. It's like he's trying to speak to me!

Thanks for the write-up. I'll give it a try on my car this weekend.

Re: Sunroof Fix for Buffeting Air Deflectors (20grit_timber)

Hi Timber,
How does this work? Does it strengthen the deflector to minimize shake, or does it add weight for something?
Thanks,
Ian.

Must be some strange language that twins teach each others (fans of SNL will remember this from the Keth Richards/Mick Jagger skit)

Real men don't buy cars with sunroofs (ducks and runs for cover)

I'm sure there is a Chuck Norris joke in there somewhere.
Sorry for the thread hijack. EXCELLENT Write up!!! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Volkswagen has a fix for the sunroof problem... they fixed mine the same exact way! They didn't call it double sided tape they tried to go big and call it special double sided noise reduction tape, or something like that!

Sorry, but that's pathetic... VW's fixes are pissing me off. Just like the "anti-rattle kit" they supposedly installed on my dash vent... their kit was breaking two tabs off the air vent, and wrapping the temp sensor in scotch tape (and it didn't even end the rattle)
They should engineer this stuff properly to begin with so we don't have to do these DIY hack fixes.

Great write-up, thx http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Have to do this... the buffeting on the GTI is way worse than my previous mk4 Jetta.

It just adds strength to the air deflector.
