Are you talking about the 98 audi? Scan with vag-com and you can see how hot the trans is. Usually if it gets too hot it will trigger a code.

Actually as I re-read your original post I realize that you possibly may be putting the carriage before the horse.
I'm assuming alot here but...
It sounds like your assuming the trans got hot and then slipped. Its more likely that the trans slipped badly making it very hot.
cup half full.... or cup half empty.
