C&D did the ***** Hot Hatch shootout...
no car broke 200bhp
lets work up to $25k and 200BHP (cept for the GTI DE)

First the Civic isn't a fantasy it's alive and kicking!!
The RS was already in a year delay and they have no idea when they'll have it ready' one of the reasons is that the 2.0L engine isn't coping well with 215hp.
Second the Civic was chosen by Tiff needle as the best hot hatch.

Well, according to Autocar magazine (I think), Honda UK reckon that the Civic Type-R will account for 40% of the 3-door Civic sales in the Uk this year - they've already upped their sales estimate from 1,500 per year to 4000 sold already, IIRC!

Focus RS looks pretty snappy. AWD and a turbo motor would make that my car.
Alas, Ford won't import something that cool.

Alpina is developing a 200 Bhp Mini Cooper S capable of outgunning the Subaru Impreza WRX. Based on the 155 Bhp supercharged Cooper S, the Alpina uses longer stroke, to stretch the standard 1.6 Litre to approx 1.8 Litre, while increased blower pressure & freer-flowing exhaust will also help boost the torque & power. BMW has access to Mini engineering drawings & an early production prototype. Insiders also claim the Cooper S 6 speed Getrag gearbox is capable of absorbing the 200 Bhp.

the RS isn't going to be AWD...it FWD!
only the Cosworth if it'll see the light of day .
They have problems with fitting an AWD to the rear suspension.

Is the GTI DE(25AE) really able to compete with the other models listed? Ultimately, its a body-kitted, big-wheeled standard GTI 1.8T with mildly upgraded brakes and suspension and a 6-speed. The Golf GTI R concept, should it go into production, would be a more likely candidate for this comparison. Still, I'll choose the Focus RS. Like Canuck said, its pure sex.

I think you need to do a little more reading on the GTI DE and spend some time in the 1.8T forum.

I am well aware of what the GTI DE is. Its nice but its no Focus RS or Civic Type R.

There are doubts as to whether the Focus RS will ever make production. The car is over a year behind schedule already. And if it does come, it will be front-drive and have around 217hp.

So, of the four choices, only one is confirmed as heading to the US. The Civic Type R might, the Focus RS probably won't and the Mini Alpina has almost no chance.
If I had to buy one of the four (and was able to) I'd probably choose the Civic Type R. More realistically, for a $25k hatch I'd take an RSX Type-S.

Alpina Mini is slated to come to America...
possibly under another badge name (there will be a 1.8L 200hp Supercharged Mini...)
CTR is coming as a 2004 model as an Si-R
Focus RS is still undecided...
and the GTI DE... is too fat :-D
