so i have a couple of ideas and i just wanted to see what would fly and what wouldn't. #1 would the 2.0 4 cyl from the mid 80s audi 4000 or 80 ft into either the a2 or a1 chassis? and #2 which rabbits does the 4k transmission come in because i have a couple of rabbit cabs (87 and 84 i think) that could be donors for my 89 gli. thanks in advance for your help.

Re: swap ideas (rrusty)

I know the Audi 80 block (3A I think is its engine code) will fit just fine into an A2 or A1 with very little modification. Personally though, I think if your going to go to the trouble of swapping the engine block, spend an extra $150 to get the ABA (and parts) for a more noticeable gain in torque and horsepower.
I dont know anything about trannys.

ABA is the shortblock VW has been using in their 2.0L engine since 1993 (I think).
It's an engine with 112hp and about 125ft.lb.of torque.
What kind of trannies do you have?Post them here I'll get you all the ratios, cose I don't know how to post a link.

Re: swap ideas (buckolaci)

so the ABA motor is from the A3 chassis? is that from the 16v engines only? i get most of my parts at the local auctions, i have a access to a dealers license so i can get complete cars pretty cheap, which is why most of my mods will consist of compatibility swaps. i recently came acrossed two rabbits one is an 87 rabbit cabriolet, the other i think is either an 82 or 84 cabriolet. i was told to look for the 4k trans out of a rabbit to make my 89 gli faster, so i am wondering if i already have one in my posession. i appreciate you help!!

The 4k tranny is not gonna make a lot of difference for you.Plus you will have to modify a couple of things like the 90mm inner joint and the smaller clutch maybe.
The ABA block was only used with 8v engines and if you buy a brand new cabriolet right now you will still find the same block in it.The 2.0L 16V had a 9a code shortblock.
Be careful when buying an audi for the 2.0L setup, because most of the 4000's had an 1800 engine just like VW's.

Re: swap ideas (buckolaci)

so i guess the main question of all this is what do you suggest i do to my 89 gli to make it faster. i mean exhaust and intakes will only get you so far. what is the best internal upgrade for my 89 1.8 16v engine.

2L 16V (9A) shortblock. The 4K will help alot and if your convertible is an 84 should have it.

Re: swap ideas (buckolaci)

yeah the cabby has a 9a which is good but why would you want a 4k the are to short of a gear ratio fo a daily driver, you should have an AGB tranny in there now which is just fine, Performance whise get the 9a 2.0 16v block and all the cis motronic fuel injection, you just need to look for a 90-92 jetta or gti 16v, and if you want a taller 5th use the 9A tranny out of one of your cabbys

Re: swap ideas (2nutz)

so maybe the 4k is out of the question, but the 2.0 block and motronic if i can get it are on my list. i was hoping to pick up a wrecked car out at the auction to salvage parts from. but i was told the passat 2.0 16v block would work as well. true? so there are no parts of these 2 cabs (aside from a possible 4k) that would be worth salvaging before i got rid of them? oh well, it was worth a try. thanks for all the great info everyone!!
