Swapping a 16v and 5 speed into an 8v Auto, what has to happen?

552 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Dieder
Like the topic says, I'm thinking about grabbing a 16v engine and tranny and stuffing it into an 8v car with an auto tranny. I know I will need to put in a pedal assembly and all the goodies for the clutch and I'll also need to grab the harness and ECU, but I'd like to see some kind of documentation on this if anyone's done it before. Would I just be better off swapping the whole front subframe?
Thanks,
Chris

I'm guessing the powertrain swap gurus just haven't awaken yet.

most people would say it's just not worth it. I would just go and look for a 16v in good condition. You would have to swap the shifter box, clutch cable, pedal assy, shifter linkage, engine, wiring etc., tranny, clutch, engine mount. And possibly more that I can't think of right now.

i'm actually doing that right now. 90 4 door golf 1.8 8v auto to 16v 5spd. i am running digi on the 16v and have all necessary parts for the swap. if you look around you can do it for under 1500.

don't take advice from people who haven't DONE the swap. A 1.8 16v CIS-E into another CIS-E car is very EASY...
you need the knockbox and wiring for the knock sensors from the 16v unless....
your 86 Jetta has the knock sensor, in which case you can just plop in the 16v (although swapping knock boxes will give you a higher rev limiter) you can keep the same main ECU.
There is very little documentation on this swap because its so easy...everything matches up. There is no need to swap subframes or anything like that....pull the engine out from the top or through the front of the car after removing the rad and rad support...
It is worth it...16v's are alot of fun, and with cams, exhaust, fuel enrichment, and a 50hp dry shot you WILL have a great time

oh yeah, make sure the Timing belt is good, if it snaps, so do your valves....

IMHO why bother with a swap it would cost you 1500 at least and you can get a 16v for that...plus the 16v will have better brakes and if your lucky recaro interior

I was looking at the pics of your swap. Pretty cool. So it's just that easy, eh? I have the 16v car with the wiring harness, computer and everything. Any special tools I will need to move the axles and suspension things? My 86 is an Auto, and the 16v 5 speed combo is from an 87 GTI, so what clutch will I have and what fuel injection is the new engine?

use the 16v Pressure Plate...your Fuel injection will stay basically the same...do you have CIS or CIS-E in your jetta? If your fuel dizzy is black, you have CIS, if its aluminum, its CIS-E. Either way, your FI stays close if not exactly the same...
You need a 12 spline 8mm tool for the driveaxles (also called a triple square)...some long ratchet extensions...some swivel joints(a luxary) ...other than those the standard metric stuff should do it!
Re: Swapping a 16v and 5 speed into an 8v Auto, what has to happen? (PAGTI91)

It's a black distributor, so will I have to use the wiring harness from the 16v and the computer from the 16v as well, or will it be just straight bolt in?

But the knock sensor should be plug and play, right? Just remove the knock box (which is where?) and plug that into the sensor on the 16v engine (where is located).
I'm going to have some people that know their stuff, at least a little bit of it anyways. You got that Caleb?

Where are you finding these numbers? All the parts I needed for my swap cost LESS than $300 not including the tranny, and half of those were NEW FROM THE DEALER the rest were all in the $25 free for all at the junkyard.

worth it? it can be and it cant be. I my case it certinally was. I had a prefectly solid stock auto GLi and it was smoking too badly to pass emissions, I grabbed an ABA and 5speed for $600. It was a no brainer. Would I have do the same thing to a GL? prolly not, cause its still just a GL.
Do a search under my name, I just covered this like 2-3 weeks ago, you will find a post with all nesssisary parts.
