Re: Switch Blade Key (DubVR6)

What kind of key did you use?
That happen to me too, when I used a spare that was cut from Home Depot.
Then I tried a spare that actually came with the car and it works fine.
Something about the keys at regular departments stores do not go well with the car.

I just got a new Key cut today from a Key Cutting Store......... But he said to me that my VW Key may have a "Transponder" which will not allow this key to start the car..... I just cant figure out how to make it work now......

I upgraded myself (if you consider it an upgrade) to the key with a built in light for at night from the dealer when mine snapped due to fozen door locks, It was a little rough getting it to work in the door at first, perfect in ignition, but in the door I would have to insert it fully, pull it out 1/8" then turn it, or it wouldn't work, After about 2 weeks, it functioned perfectly, the guy at the dealership said this is normal and the key needed to be broken in

My Ace hardware key (they have never been able to make any spare key successfully!) opens the doors but will not turn on the car. To be more acurate, the key is so rough that it will not even turn in the ignition. There is no transponder in the key.

Re: Switch Blade Key (TigerII)

in the uk all our mk3 golfs came off the line with a transponder in the keys. if you remove it the engine fires up then cuts out. its a small black rectangle 12mm x 3mm x 3mm opposite side to the torch bulb.

No tranmsponders in any Mk3 keys...look at a Cadillac, they have them...you can see the chip built right into the key, it is very obvious. I would say the key was cut wrong...or, you assembled the key so it is too far into the plastic, and therefore not going into the ignition cylinder enough...that is my quess...

Re: Switch Blade Key (Sebeck1)

I have now got the key to work, i live in the u.k and apparantly all european cars came with a transponder in the key..... so i just took the transponder out of the original key, and drilled a space for it in the switch blade key.. it works fine now...
I used a very small screwdriver to get the pin out, it took a little pushing but came out eventually..
Thanks for all your help!!

DUH! I forgot to check to see where you lived!! Well, no NA spec Mk3's came with them...and you can see what I mean, when the key has one it is fairly easy to see...glad to hear it is working for you...
