I keep an eye on this forum because you guys seem to be the most technically minded when it comes to synthetic oils. I was just curious if there's any more recent data showing which of the two is better. I read something a while back (a chart from Amsoil site?) that showed the Mobil 1 having a higher wear rating of some sort than the Synpower, but I don't think it was in the weights I'm asking about. I plan to leave the oil in for the normal change interval 8000 miles for my A4 2.8, so I want the best oil for a longer interval.
Tnx.

Use what your manual says. Synthetic will last longer, but use the grade specified in the manual.

I've seen that chart, and believe it may be somewhat biased. They also have that chart on all of their bottles ( a couple of my customers have come in with Amsoil). the weight they were testing was Mobil 1 0w30, but if you look also, they said that Quaker State's synthetic blended 4x4 5w30 oil rated better than alot of full synthetics. Not too sure about the results( considering that it's only about 1/4 synthetic).

I don't remember who... but someone on here submitted samples of Mobil-1 Tri-Synth 5w30 and Valvoline SynPower 5w40 to a lab after running the oil for ~4000 miles. It was an old post, but I remember the clear winner was the Valvoline.
I'm running Mobil-1 now, but I'm considering changing to AmsOil since I can't get a hold of SynPower 5w40.

I've been running Valvoline Synpower 5W40 (simply because this is the exact grade mentioned in the manual) for the last 6-7K miles (2 oil changes) and have been happy.

Before you spend $$$$ on Amsoil, try BMW full synthetic. Though it's labeled 5W-30, it has the ACEA A3/B3 rating, which normally applies only to 5w-40 and higher. In another post, someone claimed that the BMW synthetic was Valvoline 5w-40.
I have been using it for the last 35,000 miles and like it a lot (Only $3.80 per quart, too!) I did a compression test of all cylinders with 62,000 miles on the car and they were 195 psi, 200 psi, 195 psi, and 195 psi. I was using a $25 compression gauge, so it may have been off because new engine specs is 145 psi to 189 psi. Bottom line: virtually no wear.
