Strangest thing...went to start my '86 GLI 8v with CIS-e and I got nothing. Odly enough, with the key in the "on" position, the dash lights come on, the "brights" indicator lights up, the radiator fan starts and the tachometer bounces around, usually settling around the 2k rpm mark.
When I move the key to the "start" position, the dash lights go out and the tach goes to zero. No start, no noises, no nothing. Plenty of voltage at the battery. It was starting just fine prior to this. The temp is below zero now, so I'm not going to be effing around with it until it warms up a bit (supposed to get near 30 degrees by the end of the week
).
I hate electrical problems.

Re: tach hovers at 2k when key is in "on" position...no start... (DGruber58)

wow...that is seriously screwed up. Bastard gremlins went to town with that one.
Maybe a bad ecu?
The tach signal is odd. There are tests in the bentley for testing the coil, and related ignition components. I'd run through that, see if anything turns up.

Yeah, the tach really threw me for a loop. I was thinking bad grounds or something like that....until I noticed the tach doing a dance. I'll run through all the tests once it warms up a bit. Just thought I'd take a shot at someone else having had the same issue in the past.
