Yea, you can take them out. Just pull them out of the valve stem seals. You will have to replace the stem seals though.

If head is off motor you need a "valve spring compressor" to hold down springs while you pull the spring retainers off. Mark parts so you put things that you're gonna reuse back in same location in motor. Motors "wear in" and swappin moving parts around is never a good idea..I use and egg carton to keep all the parts in cylinder sequence when doin an overhaul. You can also pull 8V springs off with head on engine if you use an "on the car compressor tool" and either put compressed air in cylinder or use ol rope thru spark plug hole trick to hold valves up while you pull springs, change valve stem seals etc. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
