Im sure this is a common question, but this forum dosnt have a FAQ and i did search, it seems like most people are into tdi's.
im looking at getting an 86 TD, what are the common mods and gains?
-can you use a TDI block
-will a FMIC help much
-what is a good upgradw turbo
-would it be worth it to fit a EFI system such as megasquirt to a diesel
thanks.

Why not use the entire TDI engine?

Any IC will help, but only with the addition of more fuel. Pump mods are most important, air is useless without fuel

The stock turbo is too large for the engine. It'll work nicely after the fueling has been turned up a bit. The stock turbo can easily produce enough boost to destroy the engine, no need to upgrade.

Unless the megasquirt can be used with a 10000psi pump and a fuel rail and injectors to suit it's pretty much useless. The stock 1.6TD fuel system hardware is all mechanical. If you remove the fuel cutoff solenoid plunger you can drive it without a battery once its started!

"Why not use the entire TDI engine?"
i was under the impression a TDI swap into an older car was a huge hassel, with all the eletronic stuff.

ok, is this stuff you can set on the pump or parts you have to buy?
thanks

It is, no question. But it's all that electronic stuff along with direct injection that makes the power, not the block. It's just a lump of iron with holes in it...

Mostly just adjustments up to the 90-100hp level then it becomes more serious. Check out this site,

More info on the old stuff. This site was just opened a couple of weeks ago. All the previous discussion took place here,
http://www.hostboard.com/cgi-b...=4037
Probably the best place to search for info on older VW diesel performance.
