I'm in the process of adding my new TDI to my insurance policy. My agent lady e-mails me asking "is TDI the Turbo?"

Well, yes, a deisel turbo. It should be less costly to insure than a 1.8T, since it has less HP, right? I'm still waiting on her reply.

Anybody know if TDIs are less to insure than 1.8Ts and VR6s?

Re: TDI insurance less than 1.8T? (spongebob_squarepants)

I can't specifically comment on the TDI, but the cost difference between insurance for my 2000 Jetta 2.0 and 2001 Jetta 1.8T was negligible, so at least in 2001 there was no 1.8T penalty per se.
I think this highly depends on the model. GTI purchasers were complaining of high insurance costs, but I think this is more a factor of the positioning of the car (e.g. sports car vs. sedan) than the engine itself.

That's funny- when I was getting quotes for my '01 Golf GLS, the 2.0 and TDI were almost the same (TDI was 5 or 10 dollars CHEAPER per year), but the 1.8t golf gls was WAY more expensive- a few hundred dollars more. I guess it depends on where you live.

It may also vary with the insurance company. Some of them get their panties all in a wad when they hear the word 'turbo' (although you'd think this would work against the TDI, too) and don't consider that your still dealing with a car with the same horsepower as a Honda Accord.
In my case, the 2.0 vs 1.8T difference was $6/year.

Well, I find it hard to believe, but State Farm wants more to insure my '02 TDI Jetta than the '02 1.8T GTI I almost bought instead.
Sticker price is higher, but c'mon, GTI has speeding ticket written all over it! Also costs more than my '01 1.8T Jetta WE to insure, but that car is a year older and stickered lower as well. Still, I've owned motorcycles with more HP than this TDI and was bummed to learn it's not exactly cheap to insure. Well, I'm shopping around at this point and will change companies if the price is right. I like having my agent 2 miles from the house, but in 8 years as a customer with no accidents or tickets, State Farm hasn't done anything for me.
I hear Progressive, Geico and Nationwide are worth a look, so I'll start there.

If you or your parents have ever been in the military, you should give USAA a call. I was with State Farm for a while but have been with USAA for almost 20 years now and am very pleased

Re: TDI insurance less than 1.8T? (1.8Tango)

When i got my gTI in July my Dad and i were worried about ins so we got quotes for me driving the GTI and me driving his TDI Beetle, well the GTI was a little bit more, but not so much as to say it was a huge difference, I think it was about 200. His car doesn't have ABS though, and mine does, and it also has the head impact air-bags. Either way though i got killed I'm a 20 year old male driving a sports car, or so the ins company says.
