Technical questions for those who have EXPERIENCE with 1.8t conversions!

721 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  chris86vw
I have a 99 Beetle 1.8t engine conversion in my rado. The problem is that the RPM and Water temperature signals coming from the new ECU are not compatiable with my 1990 corrado instrument cluster. Does anyone out there know how i can modify the digital signals coming from my new beetle hardware to an analog signal that my instrument panel will identify? Currently the Water temp red light blinks and i have no movement from the tachometer...

Neither signal is digital, myself and others have shift lights and tachs working. And The sensor for the coolant temp going to cluster should be standard also, and not goign through the ECU.
Do you have a diagram for the donor car?

thanks for your response chris... the corrado instrument panel is definitely not compatiable to the signals being sent from the beetle hardware... looks like a need some kind of converter module or some resistors?

PEronally I would ditch teh coolant guage in the cluster and just get an aftermarket one. As for the tach, i just tapped one of my coil pack wires for my shift light, maybe that will work for you.
What year is it out of, I will try and cehck the diagram, the coolatn temp guage definitly should have a signal right to the ECU in standard form.

good info chris... the engine is a 99 beetle 1.8t

here is a pic of my instrument cluster... the speedo works just fine but no tach and the coolant gauge runs hot into the upper range with the red warning light blinking...

when you say shift light do you mean your tachnometer or do you mean the light that tells you when you should shift? the reason why i ask is i'm not sure what car you have and what conversion you have done... thanks... i'll look into tapping my coil wires...

Chris doens't ahve a conversion, he just has a shift light on teh dash. Also you may wanna try this int eh 1.8t forum. Oh and I know momentum sells a converter for the tach signal costs about 100 I think but it'll get your tach working

aside from mounting and maybe making a custom cover, will the new clusters fit into a corrado??? 1998+ gti, beetle, jetta etc

you shouldnt need a converter, as chris said those signals bypass the ecu, maybe you should have a look at some of the VDO gauges and senders, that might get you on the right way.
btw : chris what shift light do you have, i might have to phone you to get help from you about this, i really wanna install mine soon.

Rado 1.8T,
Send your cluster to http://www.adrenalinmotorsport.com. They used the OEM G60 cluster on thei 1.8T conversion. They have modified internally the cluster so that you will not need any additional modules or anything.

I have the little bity autometer one ziptied to the corner vent on teh dash so i can remove it quickly if i need too. There is a control box for it under the dash, install is very easy power ground, and tach signal. I used signal from one of the coil packs on top of hte motor, but i am going to go back and use the tach signal at the back of the ECU when I get a chance.

how much is your shift light Chris??? do they come in aluminium silver???
Re: Technical questions for those who have EXPERIENCE with 1.8t conversions! (sebz1.8t)

no silver only black, i live it less obvoius since it is on the dash. I may come in silvr now they seem to eb putting lots of new stuff out to match there other lines of guages adn stuff.
It was about 110 bucks for the light and controler, you need both parts for it to work.
