Well, I might be able to get a 318 for like $1500 with 200,000 on it

Any way, just wondering how good a car these are (E36 in general), how cheap one can find it and how slow as poop is the I4. I almost bought a 318 back in the day, however I didn't. I don't remember it being all that back but I know the car lounge hates the poor damn thing.
Bottom line, if I was to get one I want/do the fallowing.
Top-notch handeling
Stripped interior (i hate leather)
Great exhaust note
NO GOD DAMN RUSTED OUT FENDERS/SHOCK TOWERS.
Thats about it. I wouldn't be looking for a drag racer or twin turbo kit. Just simply AI, Exhaust, suspension, interior. $4,000 to small a budget? Would a C-class be a better choice?

damn.
it must really suck.

As much as the CL ******* about RWD, here is a Sub 3,000lb car, with 138hp and 50/50 weight distribution. Guess what, they hate it.

I once had a '98 318ti sport and loved it. It's not a very fast car, however it can still get to high speeds without problems. As with any car with 200k on it, be careful. Why not pay a little more and get one with lower milage?

I've been poking around. What the hell is up with prices. according to CG a 92 318i should be between 2,300 an 3,500 for good condition. I've been seeing prices of 4-6k for cars that have scratchs, rust and over 150-k miles.

You're not looking hard enough. I'm seeing several 1994-1995 740i's in good condition with less than 150k going for under $7,500.

7's and 5's become much cheaper then the 3's real quick, simply put more people desire the 3-series.
I've searched about 6 cities in Craigs list, autotrader (300 miles), ebay and some BMW for-sale forms (318ti.org and bimmerforms.com).
Anyway. Also why was the 2.5l engine reintroduced into the 1998 model year coupes and convertibles? Any one engine more relieble then the next? Are M3s significatly higher maintence then the others? (one here all work done, 96k, $11k dealer lot)
What is the fuel economy like? CG gives the 2.5l 20mpg in a 5spd and 17mpg in a 4spd (awful considering the 20/28 ratings) and the 2.8 gets 20mpg in the 4spd (yet is more powerful
). The 3.0 also hads about the same listing for fuel (27/28) does this mean it will get comprable fuel mileage to the others? (17-20mpg?). Also do these engiens require premium (Gross) or do the 2.5s adn 2.8s skate buy on 87oct?
Any diesels offered during this time period?

Because they're liabilities on wheels.

Yes, an e36 318i is slow for a bmw. 0-60 is a little under 10 seconds. I drove a 318ti and it felt slower (less torque) than my 125 hp honda accord. However, if you don't mind the relative lack of grunt there's really nothing wrong with them. From what i've heard the m42 is an excellent, reliable engine, and one could easily be made to handle like an m3.

Re: Tell me about the E36!!! (two.twoliter)

For the price I would jump on it. Upgrade the brakes, suspension, wheels tires and then swap in an M3 motor (euro spec
) or even just a 325 engine and have a great car cheap.
Way back I helped do a euro M3 motor conversion on a 95ish 325. Looked stock on the outside, but would eat v8's for breakfast.

Re: Tell me about the E36!!! (cfvwtuner)

I'm horrified, as big as the e36 seems to be the CL darling I'm getting few replies. o_O?
Also, E30 question. Are E30 M3 and the E30 325i on the same chasis, with just external cosmetic changes or are they different? I've noticed the M3 has a "higher" trunk and thicker rear pillers, along with the wide body kit. Can this body work be duplicated on a 325i?
