My little bro wants to slap a junkyard turbo setup on his 4-door Rabbit. He will be getting my 1.8L GTi engine when I swap in my 3A. Just looking for some information so he can start planning before the swap date.
- What turbo can I steal from j-yard cars?
- What do I need to do to the engine to make this thing work?
- What sort of things do I have to be wary of (fuel, heat, etc.)?
- Any good sites to look at for information?
I have the shopping list for the j-yard turbo setup off of Hardcore VW. All in all, I know diddly squat about turbos and so does he. We've been into NA cars all our lives. Sorry if this post is sort of vaque, but I don't really know what kind of questions to ask. Thanks for your help.

Re: Tell me about Turbos (67vwbug)

heres some basic basics !!

the engine needs air to produce power .
a turbo is a compressor , it uses the engines exhaust gasses to make it spin .
once this side of the turbo is spinning , the other side(which is connected b a shaft) starts dragging in air . this air is then pusshed into the engine , which produces more exhaust gases , which produces more air rammed in , which produces more exhaust gasses........... you get the picture !!

attached to the turbo (or sometimes seperate) is the wastegate .
when the turbo is producing enough boost , the wastegate opens and lets excess boost go down the exhaust instead of into the engine .
it takes its pressure reading from the inlet manifold
as the engine produces a high compression ratio when on boost ,most applications lower the engines physical compreson ratio to allow for this .
as more air is put in the engine , more fuel must be added to suit .
the more air is compressed , the hotter it gets so an air-to-air intercooler , or air-to-water chargecooler is used to cool it
pre-ignition is the worst enemy !!!!
timing must be retarded to suit boost

Re: Tell me about Turbos (ian c - U.K.)

very good post, only one thing on previous post, wastegate does not let excess boost go down the exhaust, instead opens an exhaust baypass so the turbo spins less reducing boost., very good explanation of the basics.
