Yup, like a true vortexer I spent my Thanksgiving Day
modding my GTI:

Can you tell me what I did?
And no it's not the Nologys.

That was quick!

My pal was cleaning out his garage and gave me the fan.
The harness hooked directly up and the only thing I had
to do was cut a section of the fan frame to fit over the motor mount.
Yah, those stock fans are wimpy if you ask me.

What did the double fan come out of? All the wireing matched? looks good http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Thanksgiving Day Mystery Mod (VW 91 GTI)

It's surprising that there's even room for another fan since there's not much room in the front to begin with...
Anyway, that setup is from a Passat right?

That looks like a nice fit. Can you pass on more info about where the fan is from? Have you noticed better cooling?

Re: Thanksgiving Day Mystery Mod (AthensGTI)

The fan came out of a 2.0 A3 [I think it was a Jetta].
The radiator has holes which match up to the twin fan's mounting
points and the twin fan actually
covers the entire radiator, not just 3/4's like the stock fan.
I think the A3's use the same sized radiator, [it might
possibly be the same radiator].
The down side of putting in this fan was that I had to disconnect
the A/C compressor hoses while doing the install. [I was recharging the
A/C when I took these pix.]
I think if I used a Passat fan I wouldn't have had to cut the shroud to
fit around the motor mount. But hey, free is free!!

No strange noises out of the fan yet!
But other than cutting a bit out for the mount, the fan bolts right up
like factory. The harness plugs right in. Some of the A3's come with
a "pancake" fan motor: flat like a tuna fish can, not like the beer can fan
motor the A2's got. Those with the pancake motor have 3 fan speeds
instead of 2 and those would require simple cutting and splicing of
wires to hook up.

Umm, I haven't had problems with overheating so I didn't check out
the MFA engine temp reading previously, but ever since I did the
install, the oil temp is about high 190's low 200's, inside coolant
gauge needle doesn't rise above 1/4.
The reason why I wanted to do the install was because one of my
friends [A Ford guy] convinced me to put ice packs on my intake
runners before going down the quarter mile. My times dropped a
third of a second, so I got to thinking:
Cooler engine = faster car

My friend did this mod to his 87 8V GTI and he said after the install he
never had any problems even in stop and go traffic.
As for me, it's only been since Thanksgiving since the install so I can't
tell for sure, but every little bit helps!

Probably not much. But it looks cool. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
I got one from the gomer yard two weeks ago for $35 for my x-flow project.

Is it the same height as the stock A2 fan housing? I noticed that it was slightly taller than an old A1 housing I have.

Yeah,
It's the same height. Like I said, besides the section I had to cut out to
provide space for the motor mount, it's could pretty much be factory.
If you look closely at the stock shroud, you can see that even the shroud
doesn't cover the entire length of the radiator. The twin fan setup does.
The only thing I wish I did do, but didn't was to install the two mounting
tabs on the battery side of the fan instead of the airbox side.
Take a look and you'll see what I mean. As it sits now, the fan itself is
a little too close to my battery for my liking.

Hmm. Sounds promising, and if nothing else it looks really nice. I might have to think about doing this swap when I ditch the A/C. Thanks for posting the pics and the info!

I was thinking about that too after I installed mine. Oh well, too much hassle to go back and change it. What did you do with all the AC relay crap? I just stuffed mine in front of the battery but it looks like crap there unlike how the stock fan it looked good because it was mounted to the shroud.

If you look at the pic, I zip tied it to the low side A/C hose. It came out
kinda clean.
You still using the same battery? I was thinking about using a dry cell.

Audi 4k's had a single motor but two fans... that would probably be a simpler mod and leave more space. Just a thought...

Yup, the Audi 4000 had one motor and the other fan was belt-driven... that would save some juice right there!
Also, another good rig... look at my oil cooler set-up I've decided to post after seeing this... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=164545
Good work on the fans! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
