Thule (max load)
110lbs
Yakima (max load)
165lbs
OEM Rack (max load) 165 lbs
20mm thru axles I like to use a fork mout with a Fork-up adaptor
as I really don't like how unstable and how my car handles with a Big DH big on the roof with the front wheel on it.

Fuel Economy
This is true I see about a 5% decrease in mileage with bikes on my roof and about 3% with just the roof rack. I still avg 25 hiway and 22 city (also with a 1.1 bar chip too)
Also
DIY info
1.) clay and wax your roof
2.) test fit your roof rack and adjust the feet where you want them (ON BOTH 2 AND 4 DOORS MOUNT TO the FRONT SCREW CLOSEST TO THE WINDSHIELD IT LOOKS BETTER) But don't bolt it down yet!
3.) install 3M clear bra material under where the feet will go (this will protect against the dreaded film or haze the feet can create seen here)
also install under the areas where the wind guard touches the roof. Also see DIY here
4.) install rack!

Fuel Economy
Quote, originally posted by fueleconomy.gov » |
A roof rack or carrier provides additional cargo space and may allow you to meet your needs with a smaller car. However, a loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel economy by 5 percent. Reduce aerodynamic drag and improve your fuel economy by placing items inside the trunk whenever possible. Avoid carrying unneeded items, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 lbs in the trunk reduces a typical car's fuel economy by 1-2 percent. |

I wasted a lot of money buying OEM racks, only to find out a year later that I couldn't put two bikes + a box on the roof . . . which I needed to do. So, anyone reading this who's currently shopping for racks, yakima or thule, NOT OEM if you want any amount of versatility! Not knocking OEM, it has it's place. |

Yakima Towers/bars with 2 Yakima King Cobra attachments, Mont Blanc Box and a Thule hitch rack on a Hidden Hitch class one hitch |

With those mounts, I actually have to mount one inside the tower, and one on the outside (you can see what I mean with the pic of the mounts on my Jetta below). When I need to carry both the 2 boats and bikes, I change out my 48" bars to 58" bars and use the upright boats mounts Mako Saddles are easier for me to load boat by myself when I use the Yakima Boatloader. It's a snap. Mako Saddles (shown with Hully Rollers, which I have and don't love) Boatloader (I've seen it called a Sidearm too) The Hullraisers are great when I need to carry the boats and the bikes at the same time (and I'm a little more confident that they hold the boat better) |
