i had an AGB tranny, and got one made with custom gear ratios and R&P, diff, and bolt kit.
long story short, i know my speedo gear is out now. does anyone know of a calculation, or someother way to find out what gear will be accurate in my tranny now?
1- 3.454
2- 2.120
3- 1.444
4- 1.129
5- 0.710
final drive: 3.94:1
peloquin limited slip differential upgrade (80%)
peloquin bolt kit
i also heard VW only ever made 4 gears for the speedo. green, blue, white, and red. not sure on the white tho

i am assuming one of those is for each final drive they produced (3.67, 3.89, 3.94, 4.14? (eco desiel)).
thanks

the eco desiel is a 4.25, and its a green 17 tooth speedo gear.

my 2y stock speedo gear is red.

Copied from the http://www.kraftswerk.com site, their FAQ section :
IF YOU'VE ORDERED A TRANSMISSION WITH A DIFFERENT SIZED RING & PINION THAN WAS ORIGINALLY IN YOUR CAR, YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE SPEEDOMETER DRIVE TO THE ONE THAT CORRESPONDS TO YOUR CURRENT FINAL DRIVE SIZE. THESE ARE AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL VW DEALER. PART NUMBERS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
020 3.6= 171 957 821 B (RED)
020 3.9= 171 957 821 A (WHITE)

So it looks like you will need the white gear.

Is there anything more to changing this out than pulling the old one off and popping the new one on? I think in the Bentley they say something about having to drive out a pin, but in all the gears I pulled out, I have never seen a pin.

Yup. On the inside.

So how the hell do you change it? I pulled an extra white gear off of my old cable, but it felt like it never wanted to quite go back on all the way. I'd hate to have to fish bits of plastic out of my trans.
Cheers

There is a little hole in the side of the gear piece that allows you to see the circlip when the gear is on the cable. I think its there so that you can verify that the gear is all the way on the cable (properly positioned). If you look at the picture above, you can see the hole just under the gear on the right side.
Replacing it is easy. Once you pull the gear off the cable, just grab the circlip with a pair of pliers and pull it off. A new one is pretty easy to get on, too. I think you can just slide it over the end and pop it into place (kinda like putting o-rings on an injector). Its been a couple months since I did it, but I didn't have any problems.
