I was flippin through this book @ my work and noticed that my GLI takes a 192/195 degree thermostat.
I've noticed that some people have done a "Low-Temp Thermostat."
What exactly does that do? (cool the engine @ lower temps or what?) reccomend?
THanks, Will

Re: thermostat temps? (tbird9)

The 180 degree fan switch make the fan come on at 180 degrees hence keeping the engine cooler. The 180 degree thermostat opens up the thermostat at 180 degrees doing similar stuff. Basiclly it keeps your engine cooler. Oh and Tbird my god man have you been banned again? What did you do this time?

Re: thermostat temps? (eastcoastdubs)

The thermostat isn't too bad, Dub. I have to replace a hose anyhow, so I'm gonna do mine again here soon, actually. Just have something clean to drain your coolant into if you don't need to flush/replace it.
Basically, on a CIS-E car with knock sensing capabilites, running a lower temp thermostat and fan switch will keep the knock sensor from retarding the timing as aggressively when it gets warm out. When it's over 75 deg. F do you ever notice as you shift 1-2 or 2-3 and apply throttle, your car pings *very* briefly then stops? Knock sensor in action...my car used to lose quite a bit more power than it does now with the low-temp thermoswitch and t-stat. I also think that it's nice to have a little more 'reserve' built in to the cooling system in case of something extreme occuring.
Best to replace both at the same time with units that have similar temp values.
