Thinking about getting a Jetta TDI

I have a Jetta now with a VR6, and I am wondering what the transition is going to be like. I really love my VR6, but I think it is about time for a change. How much different is it driving with TDI, and what do you guys think of the MK3 diesels vs. MK4's?

well, it sure isn't going to be as fast but you'll more than make up for time lost in the time you save being able to pass up the darn 76 station

It could be traumatic but you may really appreciate the virtues of the diesel...they kind of grow on you.

For tooling around town, the diesel is wonderful with plenty of power and surprising acceleration.
The MkIV cars are MUCH nicer than the MkIII cars. I have had both and there really is minimal comparison. The headlights are vastly superior on the newer car. The materials and construction are much nicer in the newer car. The engine's isolation is far superior in the newer car. All in all, the new car blows the earlier car away except for rear seating capacity which is pretty weak on the MkIV.
With the introduction of the MkIV cars, VW entered a new league of cars it can be compared to.
hope that all makes sense.

Agreed...a 5spd TDI (if not hammered) can realistically go 700 miles plus/tank.
How many tanks would that equal in a VR6? On a long trip, the time and fuel savings alone would allow you to have several
before the VR6 even arrived (assuming of course that while driving, the 2 cars drove the same speed).

That milage is insane....
Re: Thinking about getting a Jetta TDI (DaveFX2)

I've gotten 750 miles to a tank or so on trips back and forth between Boston and D.C. --- that's all highway miles, but driving at 75-80 mph on I-95.
I think that works out to around 52-53 mpg. That is not unusual for a TDI on a road trip.
I typically get 45-47 normally in 50/50 mix of city and highway driving. Still pretty damn good.
You can easily modify a TDI to get 140+ hp and way over 200 lbft of torque. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Performance wise, diesel cars are of course slower, but if you chip it the torque will do wonders for you.
And you´ll do half the the milleage guaranteed!
Once you go diesel, you never go back..

Re: Thinking about getting a Jetta TDI (TDIracer)

I agree with all of the above.
I went from a Corrado 2.0 16v to a Golf TDI.
Being as my drive to work is mostly urban, the TDI was wonderful. Around town, the TDI was easily as capable than the 16v unit and the fuel consumption was miraculous. Usually around 42mpg urban.
I however traded my beloved Golf in for my current car, a Bora 2.0. Reason being was I just adored the actual car itself when I 'met' it. Looked stunning. The 2.0 is ok I guess, but it uses a lot of fuel. My ideal car would be that car parked outside.. no other Bora, THAT Bora (!!) with a nice TDI unit wedged in under the hood!
I miss the TDI fuel economy badly!!
Re: Thinking about getting a Jetta TDI (DaveFX2)

Starting from a stop is different than I'm used to. I now just let the torque handle the job of starting from a stop. As the car moves then I give it gas. The opposite of my old car. Though I don't think you can rev it up (like 2000 rpm) and drop the clutch, my friend did it (he has a WRX) and stalled.
On another note my friend (PlatinumWRX on clubwrx.net) absolutely loves driving my car.
Re: Thinking about getting a Jetta TDI (converted_vw)

around town and with a heavy hit, i get about 37-40MPG..

on the freeway sitting about 65-70, i get about 51...
i do have wider and softer tires which prolly accounts for the hit in mileage..

also.. if you do long commutes, get a cheap GPS and measure your speed more accurately than the speedo can...
