Thinking about selling a Jetta...

Just wanted to get a feel for this- would I make more money selling as-is, or parting it out?
It's an '81, 4-door, '84 GTI engine and suspension, FF tranny in fine shape, dual outlet exhaust manifold, runs strong, new clutch, new hoses, new engine gaskets, OK seats, leather wheel, 5 decent teardops, body's in pretty good shape except for the front fenders (a little beat up) and the paint (very abused Colorado Red).
So, part out or what?

Nobody has any idea?

It would probably go for $1000 max as-is; not even close to that if you part it out. Sounds like it has tired engine, trans, wheels, seats. Not exactly sought after stuff. Why not keep it?
It's not too simple to make money selling project cars.

The engine runs great. If it weren't for the gearing in the FF, It'd be giving my wife's 16V 'rocco a hard time. It's torquey, it revs great, and burns no oil. The tranny shifts smoothly and doesn't complain. I've only freshened up the gaskets on both because no further action (i.e. total rebuild) seemed necessary.
Yes, the seats and wheels are "tired", but there's nothing particularly wrong with them. If you've got a bent rim or ripped seat, these are better.
Why not keep it? 'Cause I don't like it. I don't like how close to me the B-pillar is, how high I sit in it, or how far away the shift lever is... I just don't like the feel of the car. I guess I was basing my enthusiasm for the project on how much I like the feel of our Scirocco.
So: $1000 as-is? How much for parts, then? How much does a strong-running '84 1.8L go for?

The FF is a dog for sure with that engine; must be great for mileage though. My GLI with the 4K, cam, exhaust is torquey, but I wouldn't say it would give my 16V Scirocco a difficult time on any day.

How strange. I feel the exact opposite. More power to ya. Good luck with your sale.

You know, if I didn't know that everybody on the Vortex is helpful and has nothing to prove, I'd say you have some sort of grudge against me.
I was simply asking if people thought I'd make more money one way or the other, and your attitude has been more along the lines of sarcasm and spite. When I tried to provide more information in the face of your first, rather-too-dismissive post, you simply took a different tack and attacked my feelings about the car.
SO! Back to my ORIGINAL QUESTION! Does anybody ELSE have any ideas about which way is likely to make more $$? Keep in mind, I'm not asking YOU to buy this car, I just want your opinion on the FINANCIAL ASPECT.

Sorry. I guess that was my sarcastic tourettes syndrome again. Not trying to be a c*ck or hold a grudge.
Re: Thinking about selling a Jetta... (simon_reinhardt)

Well honestly, you are better off selling the whole car.
$1k would be a good deal for that car. But you may end up
settling short on a whole car sale vs parting it out.
I have to concur though, there is really nothing special
about the parts you have except the ff tranny. You will
make more money parting it out but it will take a while to
sell all the parts (alot longer than the whole car) and you will
have to deal with shipping alot of stuff.
Good luck!

Where might the car be located since it's impossible to tell? I'd say sell it outright, parting out as a last ditch option.

My opinion is that you will net about $1,000 for it whether you sell it outright or if you part it out and sell the individual pieces. However, when you factor in the value of your time and the cost of boxing/shipping individual parts, you come out ahead by selling the car whole.
Re: Thinking about selling a Jetta... (simon_reinhardt)

Where are you located? I have someone who is interested in buying a Mk1 Jet.
Re: Thinking about selling a Jetta... (VR6BOPER)

Thanks to everybody who has responded... I'm still on the fence, but if I can sell it whole, relatively soon, it's gone. Otherwise, I'll sell what I can and use some of the newer parts for my 'rocco, and a friend's GTI.
I'm in the Denver area. If anyone wants a precise list of new parts, email me.
