What's everyone's thoughts on these choices? Anything else I should look at?
I'd like to stay away from high insurance rated cars until after college. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Rangers are bulletproof. It sounds like that's what you're really seeking. Go with bulletproof.

You know everyone's going to vote for the Cherokee, so why even bother putting anything else on?

Its still a valid choice and I'm as big a fan boy as everyone else on here.

That is what I'm going for. My vw is great, has been for a first car in its 3-4 years of service with me, but every few weeks some new sound pops up, something grinds, something thumps, something rattles, I have to fix/fill up this or that under the hood sooner than later... I understand she's 11 years old, but it really wears on someone with mild OCD.

The 4.0 Jeep has no "cons" but rather quirks that add to it's rugged allure...

due to this allegation, a gang of wranglers are going to come and rape your Jetta K2 while you sleep.

Sweet dreams my friend...sweet dreams...

Legacy is out.
I've needed to fold the jetta's seats down more than I'd admit even with the huge trunk.

Legacy GTs are more common in 5 speed.
Cherokee SE, same story. Mine is a 5 speed with cruise control though, they do exist.
A RWD small pickup is gonna suck in the snow. Bawls.
That being said, I voted with the rest of the congregation.
four point oh my God.

glad I could help. I used to have an ob limited wagon and I have three friends with 00-04 LGT sedans and I was appalled that none of these cars have fold down seats.
I had a beater 98 stripper neon with fold downs.

They are hell in the winter, even with limited slip. I wouldn't do it again without dedicated winter tires, and I live in an area where very few people need to do that.

...until it's time to turn or stop. Mine was particularly bad in winter driving under every driving situation. The tires weren't great -- but I suspect that the same tires on a different vehicle would have fared better. I've driven plenty of RWD vehicles in the snow, with tires ranging from bald to excellent. The Ranger was the worst by a landslide. I did it for several years without incident, and it probably wouldn't be the one issue that kept me from buying another, but it's something to keep in mind.

My 2002 Ranger is not Bulletproof:
A/C, Heater, coilpack, and now there is a misfire that one mech. so far hasn't been able to diagnose. It has 60000 miles.
I DO NOT WANT. You DO NOT WANT. Even without the issues, it really is a miserable place to be everyday.
I'm in construction, so I need something I can get dirty, but I have been waiting for the economy to turn so I can dump this thing ASAP.

Of course, I learned winter driving skills on my mom's 2WD Ranger with an open diff and bald no-seasons.

(Which means I can very, very easily drive my Miata with an LSD and snow tires in winter.

Wow, That sucks. The vast majority of Ranger/B-series owners seem quite satisfied with their trucks. You must have gotten a bad one.
On that note- the OP might consider an 02+ 3.0 5 speed model. The 02+ 3.0 got a revised cam for better mpg and midrange power, and in a light regular cab 5 manual truck, then 3.0's torque makes them not feel so slow (and easily get 20+ mpg).

And they quite handle well on smooth pavement.
