I agree 100%!!! If one wants a four door, purchase a Jetta GLI. Easy. I simply do not understand VW's marketing choices at times. ...or Honda's; the Type R is as ugly as sin, but the 2 door Si is a much nicer, cleaner looking car. 2 doors PALEASE!!!
And those numbers are from where? Do they take into account the number of customers that wanted a 2dr but dealerships weren't asking for 2drs as part of their allotment so they had to settle for a 4dr? Dealerships made the decision before to not sell 2drs before VWs plan to phase out the 2dr. If there isn't a 2dr to even buy they won't sell.
You do realize their fan base are 4 door buyers. Just look at the charts below.
Jettas and Passats are their big sellers. GTIs are a drop in the bucket compared.

It's simple; The residual value of 2drs are lower than that of 4drs. Meaning 4drs are more sought after. Dealers see more people coming in for 4drs when they had both options. It is not something you need official numbers from, you can just go on autotrader or whatever site and look up whats more available and for which price second hand.
In my case I had a 2 door MKV when I was a single bachelor. Yes it looks a little better. Now that I’m married and have different needs the 4 door is just more useful, I have a 4 door MKVII, and I would still choose it even if a 2 door was available. Not saying there is no demand for 2 or that it shouldn’t be an option. But to not make a 4 because Jetta is silly when there is clearly more demand for 4.
Its funny, I always remember people saying that marketing and advertisting is just about telling people/convincing them of what they want, but now it all just seems to be about coddling people and caving in to their "needs" until there is no brand identity left at all.
Show me any new generation introduction since the Mk2 where there have not be folks saying the exact same thing. And yet, other than the Mk3, all have looked fantastic in the flesh.
I'm only 5'8" and I had a 4dr MK7 GTI as a loaner while they were getting my 2dr from another dealership and hated the b pillar placement on the 4dr. That really sealed the deal for me on never getting a 4dr GTI ever. I love my 2dr and will never give it up.
Hi, need some advice. First time buying a brand new car and I want to pick up the mk8 when it comes out. However, that is looking like it won't happen in the US until mid year 2021 so I've got awhile.
So I plan on picking up a mk7 gti in meantime and then getting the mk8 pretty quickly when it comes. Question is, since I will be buying an mk8 gti in 2 years, what is my best option for an mk7 in meantime without losing badly on depreciation (new, used and what year)? Thanks

yea, 2018-2019 will get me that warranty but I might as well just buy a new car if I'm going 18-19, right? Will be hard to find a used 2018 and if I do, the price is prob going to be like 25 grand or so, not far off from new given the discounts going on now.
If your budget allows it and you get a good deal, I would also recommend a 3-year lease. With that and the 1 year into MK8 in 2022, it will have most major bugs straightened out.
I’m going through this same process right now. My lease is up my S3 and I want to get back to a GTI. Also want to keep my options open for the MK8 so another lease is probably not a good fit. The best mix of features and depreciation in the next 2 years seems to be the 2018 for me anyway.

Depends on trim level and mileage. I’ve seen some 2018 SE in the $24-26k range. A new 19 will be significantly more than that. Check the forums, websites, dealer sites, etc.
