Ok, time for what I am sure is a stupid question. If running your timing as advanced as possible is the best for performance why is it that according to Bently the factory setting for 83-84 GTi is 6 BTC, but an 80 1.7L is 3 ATC. I was scratching my head about this last night wondering what VW was thinking, and why 9 degrees difference between models.

Didn't the 1.7L have points ignition? And the GTI had electronic, photo electric maybe? Anyways .....Idunno

Different cam, diff comp, different advance curve, use 12 degrees initial or 30 at 4000 rpms I think degrees total timing on a 1.8 on my 2.0 I run 6 degrees initial
