Tinting in Hawaii

I'm taking my passat over to Al's Tinting this weekend to, well, get it tinted. I want to know if any of you have stories of people getting "busted" for surpassing the current tinting laws of this great state. This will affect what level of tint i will buy.
Thanks!

Re: Tinting in Hawaii (TCP-IP)

not quite sure, but I think 30% was the cutoff???

got mine done at solar pro 2, and the guy was saying that most of the charcoal tint he had would've made mine illegal w/the tint already in the glass... put a sample on my window and used the light sensor on it, it was legal by 1% (solargard, ummm, sputtered aluminum), so I got that instead of charcoal..
take a look at several tints you might want, and ask them to test it on the glass before installing, it'll save you later on, I'm sure
my mom's saturn has illegal tint lol she got called on it at her last safety check...

Wow, mom's sporting the illegal tint LOL
. 35% is the legal limit in Hawaii. Al's tinting is a good place to go to, he like german cars
hehehehe ( in a good way
) Most cops won't bother unless you 1. get pull over and they nail you for everything and 2. you really attract attention with your car and have totally black tint. The only problem would be passing safety inspection
. Try not to attract attention to your car, with my car I have 35% tint with another layer of 32% tint which come out to around 20%-25%(I think?
) but it looks legal from certain angles and really dark at other angles. Good luck.

That's the first thing a cop will pull you over for. Then he'll tag you for whatever is illegal. To me illegal tint invites cops to poke through your car. So if you have other illegal stuff hidden, I suggest you play it safe on the tint thingy!

Re: Tinting in Hawaii (Aloha-boy)

Hey. Thanks for your replies. Your right. Illegal tinting is a gateway for a cop to poke around your car. But i'm not happy with the 35%. I'll keep you informed if/when I get busted. Once again. Thanks for the input.
Re: Tinting in Hawaii (jettazx7)

ahhh... so that makes my tint 36%

I know it's not dark, but it's reflective enough that it cuts most of the glare and keeps the interior fairly cool...

Re: Tinting in Hawaii (Rider_Wanted)

I used to have 5% tint and got pulled over, and now I have 35%. I had to pay around 300
for the fine which is why I went to keeping it legal. To me the best setup would be 20% on the sides and 35% on the rear window because if there is a cop in back of you he would'nt notice the tint and there is a little more light coming in so the sides would look legal.

Ok. Got it done. Al's men did a good job. Got the Quantum 20%. Wow! Looks dark on this overcast day. Now no one will see me if I give them stink eye!
I'm probably going for the GIAC chip next.

Its was $177 with tax. I brought a friend with his 2001 Mustang GT and we both got about 10$ off. It was one of their higher priced tints. I didn't get the front strip put in. I forgot to ask, but they did the sunroof as well.
So thats the damage for now. I'll let you know how much it costs when my I get my next car inspection or get pulled over by Hawaii's finest.
AVW4ME's $300 HPD tab seemed excessive. I was told HPD could give one ticket per tinted window. I wonder if thats what happened.

TCP-IP you're right about the fine. They fine you for every illegal glass. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
