Re: tip hesitation (matt007)

I noticed the same thing. I recently got a 2001.5 glx tip. Driving home from the dealer it felt like the car was loosing a lot of power during the shift. And since 1st is so short, the first time I thought I stalled.
It took about 3 days of short stop and start trips and I guess the adaptive transmission "learned" how I drive.
I noticed my V6 doesn't like to be "grannied". She performs better with moderate throttle. Now that I have come out of the break in period, I am having more fun

Re: tip hesitation (matt007)

Matt,
Being a little new to the family, where is this GIAC and will the tranny chip void any warranty. Also will it affect the smoothness in the other upshifts. I know what a shift kit does in detroit iron, and I dont want this harshness in my German Luxury ride.
Also, can I change the Chip or is this a techincal job for the dealor?

Yeh It feels like it falls on its nose. A stumble feeling. I had a friend drive it as he was interested in trading his lexus for one till he felt the same thing. I am going to bring it to the attention of the dealor at the next service. Maybe they have a idea. Ill let you know.

Re: tip hesitation (sniper5)

GIAC is a company/programmer that makes the Tip chip, which is basically a chip with the European programming for your Tip. I got it in late October. Under light throttle, it acts very similarly to your stock Tip. Under moderate/heavy throttle, it shifts quicker. When you're in Tip mode, and driving hard, it reduces the time of a shift (downshift or upshift) from the usual 1 sec to about .25 sec -- it makes the shift much crisper.
To really get rid of that lag/hesitation, you should combine the Tip chip with an ECU chip. I got both installed at the same time, it makes a huge difference in that regard.
Regarding warranty issues, it all depends on your service station. Some are "mod friendly" and will look the other way. Some aren't. For that reason, I opted to have a socket installed on the ECU so that I can swap the GIAC chip and the stock chip when I bring the car in for service. Unfortunately, that option isn't available for the Tip chip.
If you're close to Philly (I didn't check to see where you're from), AWE Tuning does great work. There are other tuners that install both chips, ask around.
