Hey, I have a different question. I am going to be keeping my 2001 GTI VR6 for at least 3-4 more years. I have currently 18,000 miles on it; I bought it in May 2001. I know it's a lot of miles, but a lot of trips back and forth to college, vacations, etc. I want to mod my car, but I want to keep it running perfectly throughout the next 4 years. In other words, I want it to run this well when I have 100,000 miles on it. Is this possible? If so, what should I start doing now to make sure the engine and everything will be in tip-top shape.......
thanks guys (and girls)

Re: Tips on prolonging car...... (DEAN II GTI)

It's definitely possible

As said above, keep the oil clean. This usually means changing it every 3000 miles with good oil. Keep all the fluids topped off (coolant, steering, brakes, etc). Let the engine warm up thoroughly before "thrashing" on it, or redlining it. This means several miles of driving, not just until the coolant temp gauge rises. Personally I use a fuel system cleaner (Chevron Techron), and I use Valvoline SynPower Synthetic. I also let the engine revs settle and idle for a minute or 2 before shutting the engine off, just a habit I've picked up over the years.

hmmm, if you don't do that, it may be pretty tricky trying to get 100,000 miles on it.
Seriously though, I am thinking along the same lines - I am going to have my car for a long time so here's what I'm going to do. Let it warm up before driving it. Warm it up even more before really punching it (especially if turboed like mine), let it cool down in idle when you park before you shut it off, and follow the maintenance schedule. I will do my best to follow the schedule in the manual. It may get pricey, so some may say cut corners on it, but I'm going ot have the car for a long time so I will probably do it. (Or work on it myself to save $)
