Tiptronic Question

1192 Views 13 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  l5gcw0b
if in tiptronic mode and i let the car downshift instead of me and then try to accelerate, should it be insanely slow pick up?? Need to know if this is something that should be checked outseing as though i think i have other tranny issues as well on my 01.5 GLX .
So say i am cruising along in 5th gear, i make a turn to get on the highway and the car drops into 4th while still in tip mode. now when i try to accellerate i have very little power.

Re: Tiptronic Question (bigjim)

Depending on how slow you are going when the tip drops to 4th, you may need to drop down to 3rd. The only reason the tip drops to 4th is that there are too few revs in 5th. The tip won't let the car stall, it will drop down a gear.
Re: Tiptronic Question (NJGLX)

is there some sort of norm as to when you should drop gears, is it when your rpm's get down to 1000 or is it certain speeds, i have never driven a manual transmission, so shifting up and down is new to me
Re: Tiptronic Question (bigjim)

1000 is practically idle speed. Probably more about 2000 is where you might want to shift, but it's best to just experiment and see what feels best. The Tip won't let you do anything stupid (under/overrev anyway), so feel free to experiment. But I'd say downshift about 1500-2000 and upshift about 3000-4000 under normal circumstances.
But I haven't Tip'd much, or driven the Passat long enough to get a good feel for good shift points.
Re: Tiptronic Question (idale)

is there a max rpm's that it will automatically shift at, i think i have gotten it as high as 5500 before giving in
Re: Tiptronic Question (bigjim)

Yes there is. I've been too chicken to test it, but supposedly the Tip is set to automatically upshift at around 6K rpm.
Re: Tiptronic Question (DCdave)

Ah...you haven't really driven a car unless you've hit redline
.
I know for a fact that in Tip mode the gears change automatically just a little past red
.

<squeaky voice>In my defense, I have almost redlined it in Tip mode--sheez! it's so easy when the engine's that smooth and quiet.

Re: Tiptronic Question (DCdave)

heh, I once bounced off the rev limiter on my Jetta because I was in a hurry and didn't notice I put it into "3" instead of "D", got onto the highway, foot on the floor, right about 90mph the car suddenly slowed down, I Was like "huh?" "DOH!"
Re: Tiptronic Question (jetta_fiend)

I have found that the tranny in the v6 doesn't as readily downshift as it does in the 4cyl. You seem to have to manipulate it a little more with accelerator pressure in order to down shift, say, 2 gears. A little spirited driving will take care of it though (temporarily(adaptive)). The v6 has more torque & hp hence less need to increase revs for acceleration. All this is moot if you are having real problems. Best of luck!
Re: Tiptronic Question (bigjim)

From what i've seen the tip downshifts at the last possible moment. Meaning that if you're in 5th and if JUST downshifted to 4th, it's because it would have stalled otherwise, putting you at less than 2000 rpms (aka low power) in 4th. I've found on the 1.8T the power kicks in after 2500 and hauls ass after 4000. If you really wanna downshift for power, then keep downshifting until you're at least at 2800 and you'll kickass for sure from there. And the tip will autoshift up for you at 6000.
Do you know about the kick-down postion on the accelerater? After you floor it, punch it once more and you'll feel a definite kick about 1" further - then hang on
This also works even in tip mode and will give you maximum power.

Re: Tiptronic Question (BBear)

Having owned manual cars until I got my 4-motion wagon, I figure the only reason why anyone would use the Tiptronic is if they'd want to have better control of the power like in a manual setup. It's obvious that you don't drive a stick if you're too lazy to hit the shifter down to just downshift...understand, the Tiptronic was designed to offer some manual advantages, so letting the car downshift by itself in Tip mode is sorta pointless...you might as well just leave it in regular auto mode.

Re: Tiptronic Question (bigjim)

I love kicking tween the two, full auto, and pretend-stick. However, sometimes during my daily commute, the mind wanders and I'll forget I'm in stick-mode. As has been said here, the engine is so smooth that it's not always obvious where you're at regarding the mode. I must admit that the novelty has not worn off.
When I first got the Passat, I drove without the stereo and and with the windows down to listen to the engine. When it started to sound a bit strained, I would pop up to the next gear. Then I started to play with the MPG and tried moving up earlier. IMO, 15K is early, 20K is about normal, and 45K is a blast.
I still find myself coming into a tight left-hand off ramp on my commute, and as I start to downshift to 4th, realize I've been in 4th for the last 5 miles at 80 MPH. Dooh.

Re: Tiptronic Question (cscam)

In Tip-mode a stock 1.8T hits redline before auto-shifting, however, a chipped 1.8T with higher redline (7300 I beleive is mine) will shift before hitting redline.
