Tired of losing

1024 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Pannikattk
For the past two weekends I have found myself at a red light next to brand new GT Mustangs.
Both times I lost by about two cars lengths! The new GT's seem to have a pretty decent launch on them. My car seems to have to much wheel spin and hop off the line (seems to be a very fine line between spin and hookup without bogging out).
Does anybody know if the launch and traction on the GTI's is improved with the addition of a good coil-over suspension?

A new suspension won't hurt, but the real problem is launch technique and
tires. You'd do better to get some stickier tires, and work on
riding the clutch away from the launch to keep it on the line
between maximum acceleration and minimal wheelspin. That or
get the Mustang to race you from a rolling start instead. They
do launch hard being RWD. From a light a GT will get a car
length on me and then I reel them in at the top of 1st and 2nd. (S/C VR6)

I have the factory 17" wheel package that comes with Michilen all seasons. Do you think a set of Dunlop SP Sport 9000's (Z-Rated) would make a decent difference?

17x7?
If so, an 8 inch wide rim with wider tires would help, remmeber, the more rubber hitting the ground, the more traction you will get..

I have a GIAC 1.1 Bar chip, EuroSport Intake, and a Forge DV!
The car is a 5spd also.
Do you think a full exhuast would make the difference?
Re: Tired of losing (turbo02gti)

Yeah, I think they are 17x7!
Re: Tired of losing (turbo02gti)

I would do Toyos or the Nitto NT 555s before I did the Dunlops. That is a rain tire. Get the Yokohama AVS if you want a rain tire.

Kind of odd to me. Must be your launch technique. I have Upsolute, BMC-CDA, SS on my 2002 5spd. I raced a mustang from a light today and took him by about a car length, then pulled away on the freeway.

I second that!...My GTI is pretty much stock and I ran fairly even with a Mustang GT the other night...It was off a roll in first, the guy was so surprised that he couldn't completely shake me!

I got mine from the Race Store prior to all the drama that took place recently with the owner skipping town and whatnot...I know there are several other places that do carry them, but can't remember any of the names...try doing a search and I'm sure you will find something, youre not the only one looking for the BMC!
