To Splashguard or Not To Splashguard, that is the question...

Just got news that my 02 GTI will arrive tomorrow! Woo hoo!
Quick question. How many of you have installed the splash guards (mud flaps, whatever)? One, are they effective and, two, how do they look? Two's very subjective, I know, but I'm just curious.
Looking forward to joining the club!!!

GET THEM. They will protect the paint on your car.
Plus they look really cool. In my sig I have pics of my car with just the fronts on. The rears were out of stock. I have them on now though and they look NICE.
I need to take new pics.

I've got them on the front and rear and really like them. You have at least two OEM choices: North American or European.

granted they will, but the factory ones that wrap around onto the side of the fender traap sand and dirt. with a little bit of friction messes up your paint. i took mine off after about 10k miles, and it already stated to mess up the clear coat. Quote me in a cople year, but that will be the first place these cars show rust. Plus i think they make my car look bloated. IMO.

one has a VW emblem, one doesnt, and ones Autobaun brand and ones Vortex. Sorry I cant remember which is which.

I think they look great on my 01 GTI. In fact, after installing them and admiring them for a few days, I never even notice them anymore. Do keep the side of the doors cleaner for sure.

Hello macdadmorgan, next time put some tape between the guards and the car when reinstalling them,I did that on my GTi and there were no scratches at all.I agree that splash guards are a must if you want your car to be somewhat clean...if possible buy the matching colour ones.

matching color flaps are only for the NB. all the others get the matte black ones with or without the emblems.
i got em so when i use tire shine its not all over my car.
Re: To Splashguard or Not To Splashguard, that is the question... (porsche one)

they came on the car, they were a deeler added option, the deuchies neglected to put dual sidded tape on. Whatever, there not my cup of tea, i'm not telling anyone to dislike them.

Thanks everyone. I'll certainly look into them.

what color is your ride gonna be? They definatley look better on dark cars. They blend right in on my black gti:

My driveway is red stone and they definatley helps keep splashes down to a minimum.
BTW you can't get the ones with the emblem like mine from the dealer any longer....

Well I had my dealership put them on and I don't plan on taking them off. So if they start to rust it's VW's problem if it happens within the warranty. Because it's a VW part and was VW installed.

Rood luck with that one.. Rust is only covered by the warranty if it actually makes a hole in the metal.
TS
i like mine...they help a lot more than you'd think...
Re: To Splashguard or Not To Splashguard, that is the question... (RoughDobermann)

The shape of the GTI makes the guards not necessary. The sill and wheelwell flares protrude out enough that nothing that would damage car will ever hit the smooth painted surfaces. The surfaces it can hit are such that they can take a hit without damage. I have driven car thru two winters without any side marking due to stuff thrown by wheels. Now other people's wheels, that's a different matter.
Keep the car looking right, not like an old Nash Rambler.

I got 'em on mine, a white Jetta. I love the look of them, it gives them a squatty look in the back. I put them on myself 'cause the dealer wanted $120 just for labor plus $50 for the parts

If you live in a state were it snow then yes, but if you live in a state were it doesn't then no way. MY opinion I don't like them. It make the car look like a old person is driving it.
Re: To Splashguard or Not To Splashguard, that is the question... (Cosmic VR6)

i took mine off once i found that it acts like a bucket collecting snow, ice, road salt, gravel... anything that's solid.. my splash guard had it.... along with a rotating wheel, the debris just scratches my paint even more than without it...
luckily i refunded it back for full value.
