You were right the first time around... it isn't Mattig. But the Mattig is fairly similar.

Re: TO THE OWNER THAT HAS THE BLUE 1.8 TURBO SWAP (VolkSchnell-GTI)

Hey, just to keep this tread going, I'd LOVE to get more info on the procedures of swapping a 1.8T. I thought of changing my 2.slow for a VR6 but the weight and all the suspension issues really bothered me. What's involved in a 1.8 swap? costs, parts, work? Any help would be greatly appreciated! BTW, LMS, would you say your car could compete with a VR? I guess you have a bit less power but a lot less weight and much better handling..... That's exactly what I'm looking for!!!

Re: TO THE OWNER THAT HAS THE BLUE 1.8 TURBO SWAP (VolkSchnell-GTI)

I'm just in for anything that will be faster than my 2.0!! But I'm just wondering if it's worth it. I held on to a couple 1.8T MKIV... I know they are a bit heavy compared to my 98 Wolfsburg and they weren't the best drivers. I'm sure they can kill me on they hwy but on the start, I always pull away right off the start and they catch up after a while..... I don't want to spend a load of money for something that's not really worth it.

Re: TO THE OWNER THAT HAS THE BLUE 1.8 TURBO SWAP ([email protected] freak)

Very expensive, hard and time consuming swap...Its like LBS/LMS says "if you have to ask how much, you cant afford it"
my suggestion: turbo your 2.o

Re: TO THE OWNER THAT HAS THE BLUE 1.8 TURBO SWAP (golfSPORT95)

hehehe
Yeah the grill is not Mattig but looks the same - only diff is the mattig is a two peice, meaning it uses the metal bottom peice of the factory older Jetta grill - and is a bit higher quality than my all-plastic one, I'd say
The 1.8T swap is not cost efficient, pretty difficult to do, but damn sexy anyways
Definitely the best motor setup if you don't like compromise - the weight of a 2.0 but the technology in the 1.8T is steps ahead of both the 2.0 and VR
To have it done for you and done right, expect to pay 6-10K depending on who does it.
If you do it yourself you can save a couple grand but it wasn't worth it for me, so when it comes to technical questions about the swap I could very well have no clue

That's a nice way to put it!
I guess I'll just have to go find me a corner and become a man hoe for a couple of years cause their will be a 1.8T in my car! Where did you get yours done LMS? In the states or in BC? I think I would probably have to do it myself cause we don't have too much performance shops around..... more of the rice chop-shops..... I'll just wait to get my other job and buy an S4, keep the jet as a hobby!

Re: TO THE OWNER THAT HAS THE BLUE 1.8 TURBO SWAP (86 VR666)

It all depends on how you do the swap as to whether it's expensive. I've been looking in to it for my Golf. Basically the cheap way is to buy an Audi 1.8T with cable throttle for around 3,800. Then for another $350 buy the Golf/Jetta4 intake manifold. The hardest part is making custom piping for the turbo and a custom downpipe. Then you can slap the 2.0L flywheel on it and mate it to the stock tranny with a heavy duty clutch. If you want it to be done right though I'd upgrade completely to VR6 driveline with a G60 flywheel and tranny.

Thanks!!
Now I'm starting to get the picture.... I think I'll try doing it myself next year. As soon as it's off the waranty, I'm getting me a 1.8! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: TO THE OWNER THAT HAS THE BLUE 1.8 TURBO SWAP (H2oVento)

I'm not sure I'd want to do that. My car is my daily driver and I want it to stay as reliable as possible! I just figured I'd have more luck swaping the whole engine. I can't say I'm a fan of those turbo kits, seems lots of people are having trouble with them....
