To turbo or not to turbo...

581 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  billgti
My wife and I are looking at a new '02 Jetta and she's letting me pick the engine (she gets cold weather package and color).
Thinking in the long term what kind of maintenance am I looking at if I go with the 1.8t considering it has a turbo, as opposed to VR6? Is there anything I should know before we buy?
Thanks in advance.

Well if you are planning on modifying the Engine.... go for the 1.8T, a lot of potential.. Easy to modify.
if your planning on keeping the car for long term efficiency the VR6 is the way to go... smooth powerplant, gobs of torque.. And if u turbo the VR6.. then u will unleash a monster!!

just get a 1.8T. It's practical because it safes more gas then VR6, cheaper to mod, and it's also lighter.

theres nothing really big with the powerplants.. maintenance is pretty much the same... itll be covered under warranty anyways for first three years... These car have minor problems such as window regulators which will be replaced under warranty... everything mustve been corrected by nw for the 02'

vr6 not really worth the extra price (now atleast) imho.
if u can wait, get get 201hp vr6, that should kick ass.

Can't wait!

You're right about the price, over $1k more. Also the '02 1.8t has 4 more hp

A buddy of mine is buying a '02 a4 1.8 and is jealous that my dub will have more stock hp. He's gonna chip his so I won't be ahead for long.
