Today I had my 11th & 12th window regulator replaced

1114 Views 20 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  u4ea
Today my local dealership replaced my 11th and 12th window regulators. Driver and Passenger side on my 99.5 GTI.
Freaking crazy huh?

I also had some lighting problems with driver front headlight wire harness.
My last replacements for both reulators was 4/01 for the drivers side and 8/01 for the passenger side. So the spare part warranty took care of the replacement. If that didn't work I have Masterguard Extended Warranty.
Well, when I brought my car in the morning, I showed them the light problem. I also explained that I didnt want the light fixed unless it was covered by Masterguard.
I get a call around 3:00 pm saying the car might be ready to be picked up at 5:30pm... but I might have to keep it over there and get a rental if its not.... Im thinking oh brother not another BS rental.
I get there at 5:15pm or around there.
I walk over to service manager who states car should be ready any min.... To my amazement my car pulls up and is backed into a parking space.... Im thinking http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif VW dealership actually did it!

So, the service manager starts finishing the ticket, I tell my wife to go home.... and that Ill be driving my car back shortly.
Service manager says it may take a bit longer
since he needs to finalize everything with Masterguard. So, he makes the call... he's confident Ill be out of there with only a $25.00 deductable.
Finally he starts talking to Masterguard rep, and states he was just finalizing a RO and needs to get final approval for work done and to get the deeductable amount. Masterguard rep asks what was done to the car? Service Mgr says had to replace drivers side light and wiring harness. Masterguard says oh.... we cant authorize that we dont replace headlights. This is after the service manager had approval from another rep earlier.... supposedly. Masterguard says sorry SOL buddie and hangs up.
Service manager is not looking too good right now and he seems a bit nervous.... he knows I am super pissed off that I have had more work done to my car then the Sears Tower did when it was built.... He says, they wont approve it.... my jaw hits the ground cuz Im about to get sucker punched for like $300+ dollars.... to pay for repairs to the light after I was told it was covered....
I take a breather and call my wife.... to share my misery. She calls our Lawyer

Service Manager calls Service Department manager over.... yeah confusing isnt it.... service manager 1 explains to service manager 2 what happend.... and its looking grim for me.... I say abruptly I am not gonna stand for this... and ramble a bit about how I was told it was covered and I shouldnt pay for it if thats what was agreed to.
I call wife back.... they watch as I assult the english language with every cuss word I know....
I get off phone, walk over to the 1st service guy and say Ill call Masterguard and Ill get it taken care of. Service guy 1 smiles and says I did it one better then that.... Seems while I was going nuts on the phone they called the VWOA district manager expaling the regulator problem and start to explain the light issue and the VWOA guy says... Fix it, 100% on VW...the customer has had enough problems for today.
So, even though I have almost 45,000 miles on my VW they hooked me up. Im feeling great, got oil changed, windows fixed and light fixed all for a doughnut (zero dollars).
Im driving home happy as can be... knowing I ducked the $300+ parts/service bill....
I roll down my windows Crank some Smashing Pumpkins... think about installing my Eruoswitch that I got in the mail today from Seinna (sp) I pull into drive way, hit the auto up button for both windows.....
and the passenger side wont go up all the way
http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

Yup you heard me, it wont go all the way up! Looks like Im either on my 13th regulator or something is installed incorrectly (most likely answer) Like last time they fixed passenger side they forgot to reconnect my passanger side door handle so it wouldnt open from the inside.
So WTF do I do now?

I guess that will have to be another thread...

Thart sucks dude...I have my first Dub on order, and I'm terrified of having these problems, (in addition to the other rattling, 2nd gear grind, etc probs) but the car is so much fun to drive, I'm gonna tough it out and hopefully I wont go insane. Anyway, I'd go back to the dealer and raise hell again. It worked once, and serv mgr 1 knows how much $hit you've been through, so I'd think he'll help you out. Hope it all works out man.

Re: Today I had my 11th & 12th window regulator replaced (u4ea)

I was told by the local service manager that there is an improved regulator for these kinds of incidents and thankfully installed in current model year units. Isn't there a tsb? Not certain about this, but do consider investigating. That many replacements is quite insane and I'd be frothing like a mad dog. This is a safety/security issue. I disagree that you've had a good service experience. A good service department would have sorted this out for you, imho. Good luck.
Re: Today I had my 11th & 12th window regulator replaced (bdw31)

Window regulators should be fixed with any new model.
And I don't know anyone else who has had 10+ window regulators fail, so I'd say this is a rare circumstance and you shouldn't be too worried about it.
Re: Today I had my 11th & 12th window regulator replaced (medium cool)

The service department did sort it out for him.
They just screwed up on the passenger side work.

Re: Today I had my 11th & 12th window regulator replaced ([email protected]_VVuLFzBoRg)

Let me clarify. I've had my car for 3 months and the passenger side window regulator has already gone once. It's a used 99.5, so I don't know if any of the window regulators have been replaced before. But I have never heard of anyone on their 11th or 12th regulator. That is what I mean is a rare circumstance.
Obviously the window regulator problem is common, but I doubt there are many who have had to replace that many.
Anyway, I was replying to the person who wanted to buy a new VW and was concerned about the window regulator problem. If it was my car that needed 11 window regulators, I'd be damn pissed, but if you're considering buying a new one, you shouldn't be worried about window regulators since the problem is fixed... supposedly.
Even if its not, window regulators are not a reason not to buy an otherwise wonderful car.

Re: Today I had my 11th & 12th window regulator replaced (u4ea)

I had a 2002 Jetta as a loaner when my car was at the dealer for a week and it had the new improved window reg. It doesn't go down all the way, leaves a little up in the corner and it doesn't make that thud noise when it goes down, like mine does (2000 Jetta). So far I've only joined the reg club once, but I don't use my windows very much.
Re: Today I had my 11th & 12th window regulator replaced (u4ea)

Geez. 12th regulator. That's crazy.

What exactly does a failing window regulator sound like? Tonight I noticed my driver side rear window makes a funky clunking noise when I put it up. I had to roll the window up and down like 20 times to make sure I wasn't going crazy. The other windows don't do this. Also whereas the other windows close with a "THUD", this one closes very, very softly. Am I on borrowed time or what?

Sound like a clunk, sometimes like there is a piece of rubber hitting the window, and a couple other sounds..... wish I had a way to record it for you.... maybe on my 13th regulator Ill post a link to the sound of it....
Re: Today I had my 11th & 12th window regulator replaced (u4ea)

Are your windows tinted? I'm certainly not saying they shouldn't be because the regulator design should be more robust as all these failures show. I have seen other posts on this topic where dubbers have said the dealers try to get out of the regulator warranty if the window is tinted. I had two regulators fail, then was "advised" to remove my illegal tint by the HP. I haven't had another regulator fail. I don't know if it's coincidence or if the drag caused by the tint broke the regulators.
Re: Today I had my 11th & 12th window regulator replaced (VR6GTI'00')

I've had my used 1999.5 for 3 months now and the passenger side regulator has gone out already. I don't know how or if any of the regulators on the other windows have been replaced by the previous owner or not. But my windows are not tinted. I am planning on getting them tinted.
On a possibly related, possibly unrelated note, I just noticed, as I was cleaning out my car that my rear driver's side window won't roll down. I suppose that's better than it being stuck down, but its annoying knowing it doesn't work. Oh well, as long as it stays up, I'll just leave it until my next oil change.
Could it be the same regulator problem? or a different one?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned LEMON LAW
12 times? That's definitely Lemon Law category. Do yourself a favor. Get that money back, and go get a better car (non-Vdub maybe?)
wow man...im sorry to hear that. I am only gonna ask a simple question now, so dont get pissy
How do you treat your car? I mean, do you open and close the windows often, slam the door shut, play with the windows..what? This is crazy, im not blaming you in any way...but 12 times??
tell us what you notice when it breaks, so we know what to look for...you are the window regulator guru here
