I'm taking delivery of a Tornado Red '02 Jetta next week and I need some help with protecting the paint's finish.
I turned down the dealer's paint protection package because it was expensive ($400CDN) and I couldn't get enough info on the details of what it was.
A couple people have recommended that I go with the Ziebart PROTECT-A-SHINE ($200CDN) which is a long term treatment.
I want to protect the shine. I regularly wash and wax, and strip the wax once a year after winter but I remember my Tornado Red Corrado started looking a little dull after the third year. Do non metalic colours not have a clearcoat layer on top?
I know the Corrado didn't have clearcoat so I'm not expecting the Jetta to have one either. My other cars with clearcoat have been easy to maintain without extra protection. Thanks for any advice you may give.

Re: Tornado Red & Paint Protection - Xpost from Detailing (zaphodtheprez)

Clear coats pretty much the best. Don't go for that crap like dimond coat!!!! Major rip off. Wax really only last weeks and not months in my opion. Have you ever try running your fingers along your car after you spent 3 hours waxing it. (nice and smooth.) Well if it rains for a few days, try it again. Start to feel rough again. It's all that chemicals in the rain. The best thing to do if you have the money is to get more layers of clear coat. I had a friend who had 3 layers of clear coat on his NSX. It worked cuz his car's a 92 and it still looks nice. A lot of $$$$$ spent

that stuff is a rip off, even for free! I had mine thrown in for free (since I couldn't NOT have it, i wasn't paying for it) when i bought my civic, and all it did was shine it up for a while till I washed it a few times.
I took it in twice for the service, till I realized I could get a much better shine doing it myself.

Joe,
That's great news! If it already has clearcoat I can maintain the shine myself!
BTW, ABT_VR6, just curious to know what a clearcoat may cost?
