Re: Towing with a VR6 B4 Wagon (scda1)

Simply put... dont tow something with a car unless its an AMC Eagle.. its not made for it at all!!!!! Buy a truck if you want to tow. If your car already has a hitch HACKED onto it i feel bad for the car. If it does not, dont put one on! Put a rack on the top with a mcdonalds box if its somthing that can fit up there.

Re: Towing with a VR6 B4 Wagon (PerL)

I tow a motorcycle trailer around the country, I've probably logged at least 15,000 km with the trailer behind. With one bike, it's 1100 lbs. With two, it's 1500 lbs.
In Europe, exactly the same vehicle as mine is rated for 600 kg if the trailer is not equipped with brakes, or as much as 1200 kg if the trailer has brakes and the maximum slope does not exceed a fairly generous amount which I don't recall.
With the gasoline engines, make sure your cooling system is all good. It's not an issue with the diesel, mine never goes past 90 degrees C even when the trailer is behind, it's +32 C outside, and the a/c is going full blast.
I wouldn't do it with auto trans, the auto trans is weak enough as it is without the extra load of hauling a trailer behind. 5-speed is no problem.

As long as the trailer is balanced and the weight not exceeding 2000# you are fine. My friend tows two Waverunners or two snowmobiles with his '96 A6 Quattro 2.8 with no problem and it the same engine in a heavier car. I driven it many times w/the trailers and it really it a breeze.
EDIT: It is an automatic and we drive the snowmobiles 6 hours up north at 75mph. Also, with the aluminum trailers, the weight is around 1500#

VW may allow 1500kg or something on a B4 Passat in Europe, but that is with European spec tow hitches.
I have a European spec tow hitch, and it bolts to the "chassis rails" in four places, basically replacing the bumper irons. This is how VW intended it.
US hitches tend to bolt in one or more places to the trunk floor or spare wheel well, as cheap hitches used to in Europe. This configuration is not strong enough for a 1500kg trailer, and this type of hitch is now illegal to sell in Europe.
Also note that 1500kg (or there abouts) is the limit for a braked trailer. The limit for unbraked trailers is much lower at something like 500kg.
Lastly I would never tow more than about 1000kg with my Passat, even with a European hitch and brakes, simply due to the risk of the trailer taking control and causing a snake. This happened to me once and wrote off my car (my previous Peugeot).
That said, you can tow a light trailer with a B4 and US hitch, or a heavier one with a proper Euro hitch and brakes.
Here is my trailer

Not to be dinky, but the Audi 2.8 is not anything like our vr6....the Audi's is an actual v6...the only similarity is the 2.8...and I doubt Audi's 2.8 is as "high maintainece" as the vr6 is either...

If you are that interested, you can see actual gif images of European tow hitches and fitting instruction for B4 Passats at http://www.hatfieldheath.freeserve.co.uk/passat/passtowb.html
There also instructions on how to wire up the trailer lighting without cutting your wiring loom.
Copy as much as you like, as long as you give credit to http://go.to/passat
