Toyota is recalling 978,000 sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks because of concern about the power steering system.
The affected vehicles include 4-Runner SUV's, compact pickups and T-100 pickups built between 1989 and 1998.
Toyota says a rod linking the steering wheel and the wheels may fracture under conditions where the steering wheel is turned while the vehicle is stopped.
The automaker plans to notify owners beginning next week.

In before the "Well at least Toyota took responsibility and recalled it voluntarily... even though when Ford or GM do the same thing I would comment that this shows their cars are crappy and that they probably fought the recall the whole way."
Hey, this is the CL. Responses to threads can be guessed before they are made.

And to cover the initial bases:
"At least Toyota recalls its vehicles, unlike you-know-who..."
"Toyota sucks!"

EDIT: Nevermind, it's already been taken care of...

The recall is for cars made from 16 to 7 years ago. Unlike Ford or GM that recalls cars after 2 years.

So toyota gets credit for taking their sweet time getting around to it?

Toyota isn't much better in that regard either:

NHTSA investigates Toyota minivan fires.
December 3, 2001
The NHTSA opened an investigation on the 2002 Toyota Sienna minivans after reports of fires in the engine compartment surfaced. Small children had to be evacuated from the vans after they began without warning. The Toyotas have not yet been recalled as the investigation looks into the auto defect.

Whatever happened to the case with the Ford Explorers flipping over after a tire blow out and killing many individuals. It disappeared in the news after the Iraq invasion.
Now Ford is burning down houses

Notice they use words like CONCERN and MAY. They don't have to recall those old trucks because most likely only few people had this happen, but then what do you expect from old cars. Toyota did it to uphold their image. When Ford of GM recall cars or trucks, it's because a bunch of them went up in smoke or people die or were injured.
