traction in the snow?

707 Views 16 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  SuperDaveMK2
you guys with dropped cars & low pro's what do you guys do when it comes "traction" time?

I'm talking about more of the city type driving (not real heavy stuff!) Does anyone use cables?
There is also this stuff called "Tire Trak" that we sell at Schucks where I work. Has anyone used anything like that before?
I basically want to know the best way to stick to the roads under bad conditions! As you all know our A2's aren't exactly heavy cars,
a good gust of wind in a little bit of snow & slush and off the road you go!

(And no, throwing on winter wheels is not an option!
)
THanks, Will

Re: traction in the snow? (dubwerkz)

i usually roll off a lite or a stop in 2nd gear in the snow...and i always keep it up a gear than i would normally do..keeping the rpms very low so that i cant floor it and cause a spin out. or a loss of traction. because when in high gears..as soon as you even "blip" the throttle the wheels start to spin. just try and keep it below 2500rpm in city driving.

no problem in the snow, get good tires and take everything smoothly, planning way ahead. i've never had to resort to 2nd gear myself, just be nice with it, heh.

Has anyone had experience with cables? good/bad?
THanks

The cable chains interfere with the strut, so for chains it's the old fashioned chain type.

I bought snows a couple of years ago and will never run another winter without them. There is no snow ,in WI
, that I can't get around in. I can actually accelate briskly in snow and they stop way better. And mine were used when I bought them, got'em for $150 too.
I'd say look around for some used snows, they are worth it. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Once the car is lowered, you can't put chains on. If you don't want to use a seperate set of wheels for the days it snows (I do, but I'm anal like that) you chould check into the "studless tires". They have either microcell technology that improves traction or they have pieces of walnut shells imbedded in them (no joke).
For best results, look at what the quattro guys are running.
BTW, if you use a traction tire you NEED to do it for all four wheels; or experience trailing throttle oversteer at the wrong time

Yah, why can't you grab a set of winter wheels?
Unless you have 11" brakes, you should be able to go for the "low & nasty on stock wheels" look.

I agree. Most high performance tires and snow = dangerous. A couple years ago I got stuck going home in a mild dusting of snow. The snow just barely covered the roads. I was running Pirelli P7000's. Scary experience.
Re: traction in the snow? (tram)

Just wanted to ask why getting winter wheels is not an option? You can find a used set with tires cheap just have to look around.

I'm still in major debt right now, so I can't afford to even shell out a lousy $100 for a set of winters! http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif I think that by the end of december I might be getting better cash flow http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Maybe I'll ask Santa

if your tires are in good shape you can have them siped,, I think it costs like $10 or $20.. not bad.
Re: traction in the snow? (DrMSH)

I have a set of 13" rim with winter tires on. I have no problem with them. My main concern is the 28mm bad arse sway bar in the back. The car is too tail happy on snow. Once I changed lane on Hyway at 60km/h and my arse switched position with my front end. Kinda scary
