tranny died?

I was driving home today and tried to put the tranny in fourth but it didn't want go...the clutch was not working. Since I was in traffic and rolling, I was able to shift w/out the clutch and I got into into 4th w/out grinding. Luckily traffic was smooth and I didn't have to stop. I didn't want to for fear of the tranny not going into gear from a dead stop. I exited the highway close to my destination and pulled into a gas station. Sure enough, I couldn't get the tranny to go into any gear while the motor was running....the clutch was "not working." I turn the motor off and it freely goes into all gears where normally it would be "notchy." So I call VW roadside and at this point I am waiting on the verdict....who has had the same problem and what was the "fix?" Guess I will have to cruise in the 11 second beater for now thx
