yesterday the automatic tranny in my '91 C went blank on me... while in driving gear... twice!!
so i put it in neutral and then back in drive and scince then it's been working fine.
what's going on?? could the tranny just be missing some fluids or is this a premonition telling me it's time to put that plan involving a wells fargo truck into action for a 5-speed swap?
Yeah, when was the last time you checked or changed the fluid? Automatic trannies are very dependant on fluid pressure, so dirty, old, or low fluid can cause problems.
On the other hand, this could be a sign that your tranny is on the way out. So change the fluid, but start saving for the 5-speed conversion.

worst part is your availablity to shop around for parts or a good deal in P.R. I would not recomend a big pricey kit to many people But you might want to check this page out: http://www.eurospecsport.com/transconvkits.htm
But if you have access to a 16V passat 5spd that is a good car to rob of all the parts but then again I'm not sure about its flywheel size.
keep us posted. BTW does your car still have the filter on the top of the tranny? Its not supposed to be there and VW was to remove it shortly after break in. I read this somewhere but it esscapes me right now. Frank
be very careful with your tranny, and be prepared to suffer a MAJOR loss if it does go. here was my dilemma: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=235735. I havent had my C for over 2 weeks, but a donor tranny is on the way, just before i'm planning on selling it.
i'm cheking the atf by the book but the oil seems to be smeered all over the dipstick. i figured it couln't hurt so i added a bout half quart of atf since the incident and now the tranny seems to be working fine... i don't know how much oil it would need since i can't get a true atf reading.
Smell your ATF. When it is shot, it smells burnt. Sniff the fresh stuff and then sniff the old stuff, and it will be really obvious if the old stuff is shot. You might wanna drain the fluid and replace it if it is shot, the tranny won't function right.

how esactlly do i go about replacing the atf? i din't see any screws where you can drain the atf like in the engine oil pan. seems like you just drop the pan that covers the valve body of the tranny and then replace all the seals/gaskets when you put it back. is this right?
i'm really cautious about this and don't really want to mess with it or touch it unless i definitlly have to.
Not many people have automatic g60's, so that is why you aren't getting a fast response. Do you have a Bently? I am sure it says in there how to do it.
On my old automatic Saab 900 turbo, you had to take the pan off the tranny to drain the fluid. It was a mesy job.
