Tranny Question

582 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Agtronic
is it a common thing for VW trannies to break. Everyone i've talked to said it is a plauge for VW's. i would like to hear what your experiences on this issue have been. My car has 80 km on it and the diff blew a whole through the tranny, no fault of my own. 2.0 8v

Re: Tranny Question (JKR)

well....110K miles....Factory Tranny, Factory Clutch, not a single engine, or tranny problem...
Re: Tranny Question (Pagano)

most common problem is the second gear synchro going bad and grinding during hard shifts.
the stock diff is also prone to damage if you drive too hard. (excessive burnouts)
Re: Tranny Question (JKR)

What you've heard is true. I'm on my third right now. It's the rivets that hold the ring gear to the diff assembly. They'll wear out and one (rivet) will go flying through the casing, and if you have a brand new sport clutch, you can bet your left nut that the rivet will blow that hole inside the bellhousing!

Oh, and synchros are known to to if you play too rough.

Re: Tranny Question (Agtronic)

Agtronic, thanks for the info and that same exact thing happened to mine but i think it broke when i accelerated on a patch of ice, it made a weird sound next thing you now i see the diff fluid dripping from under the car. The only tyhing is i dont do burnouts and ish like that and it still happened, plus its winter now and i got the snow tires on so i wouldn't bother doing a burnout.
Re: Tranny Question (JKR)

mine burned out at 40k
Re: Tranny Question (Jetta546)

AHHHHHH not good... i just blew my automatic trans and now i just converted it to a 5 speed.....anyhow i just put in a HD sport clutch so, do i have a good chance of blowing my new transmission????? if so, should i just replace it with a stock clutch....its a lot cheaper IMO..

You don't have to be rough on it for it to blow. It's the synchros that don't like to take abuse. The differential will blow when ever it feels fit to do so. Mine blew when I was on an onramp doing 70 km/h, so I wasn't doing anything inapropriate. And don't like burnouts, so I don't really do anything like that either.
Just hope for the best. One thing you can do to prevent the tranny from blowing would be to open it up and replace the rivets with a bolt kit. (And while you're there, may as well throw in a quaife 6-speed gear set and diff) ...

NO NO! What I meant was that according to Murphy's law, the more expensive the clutch, the more likely the rivet will pop through the casing in the bellhousing, letting all that fluid out onto your brand new clutch!
Having a sport clutch will not make your diff blow sooner ...
