Tranny ratio explaination please...

658 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Frankulie
I've got an AUG tranny with my GX block and low compression head in my pickup.
Is this tranny a keeper or should I get rid of it next year with this lousy engine, so i'm told?
Could someone point me somewhere or explain if your so inclined on how to relate the different ratios to performance types. I have a thick head and can't translate what all the published ratios actually mean, expecially when your talking about swapping out gears, like 5th. How do i determine what the best set up is?
I plan to keep the current setup for the next year and then put in an A3 2.0 8v once i fininsh building it so keep this in mind while answering.
I Hope someone isn't too tired of hearing this question to answer it again.
Thanks in advance.

Depending on your engine set up is going to be the main factor.
The higher the number, the more revolutions of the engine.
More revolutions, more torque to the wheels but higher the RPM.
Desirable transmissions have a high number for the final drive and high
"close together" ratios for the individual gears. (83 GTI) It all depends on
what you want to do. This set up may or may not be right for you.

That is one way of looking at it, granted most people who are talking about swapping trannies will be looking to go in that direction but it really depends on your driving style and the use of the vehicle.
If you want a fast accelerating, closely geared, often shifted, always near the powre band rev happy car that likes to go thru gas then get a close ratio tranny like that in the 83-84 GTI etc. 5th gear is also low so for highway use it is common to swap the 5th from a .89 or .91 gear to a higher overdrive gear like .71, .75, .76.
If you don't want a close tranny and prefer a wide 5 which will allow you to drive without shifting as often and reach higher speeds in each gear then get a wide 5 with the affrmentioned overdrive 5th. With the ABA you will have enough power to make either tranny work well although you may find the close 5 too close for your daily driving style. If you are in to track style driving and enjoy the twisties you may want the close 5.

It's like a 10-speed bike (that's how we use to
call them)
The engine is like your legs, the gears in your
transmission are like the crank gears (pedals)
and the final gear (ratio) is like the cluster of
spurs at the wheel. You could say bicycles have
2 or 3 gears and multiple final gears !!!
As a rule.....a higher gear number(taller) means
more acceleration and less speed and a higher
FINAL gear number means more speed and
less acceleration. Changing the final gear can
turn a regular gearbox into a 'close-ratio'.
