Hey gang,
Got a '96 Automatic Jetta with 120K miles, whenever it is cold it slips out of drive into neutral. You can rev the engine, and in about three seconds it slips back into drive (often with a tire sqeal) or just wait a sec and it reengages. Has anybody experienced this kind of thing before? Couple of my theories:
This happens especially when on an uphill incline, and I recall some Automatics having a switch that detects if the car is at a greater than 2.5 degree angle and would automatically downshift to conserve brakes... could this be defective possibly?
or...
Could it need a fluid change? The Dealer says its a lifetime sealed transmission, and to even check the fluid level requires the diag computer.
The car operates flawlessly once it has warmed up (often the problem only persists in the first 5 minutes of driving. Any ideas welcome and appreciated. Thanks,
