So, I've got a 98 Jetta GLX VR6 with a 5-speed MT (do not know what code).

I want it to ride more relaxed at highway speeds (above 75MPH) plus also increase the MPG (the car currently hovers arond 23MPG combined), so I think there are two options, but I've never swapped a tranny before. I've only dropped them and put them back on and that's it.

Option 1: Swap 5th gear only with a TDI gear.

Option 2: Swap the entire tranny for a 6-speed MT.

Which is the easiest, most cost effective way to do it? Do you guys have pics or something showing such changes? Would there be a need to swap any kind of ECU? Keep in mind I only have access to a set of mechanic's tool, some ramps and a hydraulic jack, so also tell me what specialized tools I would need for each option.

My 24V on a 5 speed is around the same as my R32's 6 speed on the highway in 5th/6th gear.

6 speed transmissions have shorter gearing.

Do the TDI 5th gear.
