Ok i have a 87 16V and the tranny is on its way to taking a dive. Im in school for auto mechanics and im going to yank the tranny out and rebuild it for a manual trans class. My question is who (if anyone) makes a good rebuild kit, like a bolt kit or something for my rocco also i want to throw in a LSD if possible when im in there. Not too expensive I'm only makin hourly here.

All the rebuild parts are available from the dealer, including the bolt kit. Or you can buy them all from Mike Potter at http://www.parts4vws.com.
The only LSD available is a quaife and they're around $900, sometimes you can get them on a group buy from around $800.

Re: tranny woes (DocWyte)

I just resealed mine and put in a bolt kit and a clutch.
Cost like 250 all together, if its "going to take a dive" you'll need more parts probably, what makes you think its going to take a dive?
whining? crunching ect?

Re: tranny woes (4string)

I for get the name of the gear but some springs that hold it in place are broken and or worn out from my hard shifting. Yeah i got the close ratio box. the noise sounds expensive

Do research on your transmission dude

I think you have a close-ratio gearbox that
came with the damn rivet. It will not last
so you should replace it with the proper
circlip....I ain't kidding man, if you gonna
open that sucker, do it right !!!
A limited slip diferrential is nice but usually pretty
expensive $$$$
For that amount of money, you could convert
it to a 6-speed !!

Re: tranny woes (pastpargolf)

You don't have the gearbox with rivets !!!
It's easy to say that your transmission
is good 'cause it didn't break yet....
wait until it does !!!

I looked around and it seems it's all GTIs,
GLIs, 8v Sciroccos and Cabriolets from 1983
to 1986 that have this gearbox !!
Their serial numbers start with 15102.
Sorry 'bout that

Pastpargolf, you don't have problems 'cause
you don't have that gearbox !!! (it seems...)

Wha? They *all* have rivets. That's what holds the ring gear to the diff on *all* factory 020's.
I've been into several lately. Some have the high-hats installed with the rivets lining up with the cross-shaft in the diff. Older ones don't seem to have these.
Odd thing is, on a 9A I just got for parts - it had SMS'd - it DID have the high-hats AND it had the circlips on the shaft. Seems redundant. Anyway, one of the high-hats had let go, and poked through in the usual place in the bellhousing.
So...dig in there, get your rebuild kit (what, $50 IIRC) and the Peloquin LSD kit for like $90, read your bentley, and fabricate the tools that your school won't have (the case separator and the extensions for the 2-jaw gear puller). The bolt-kit at about $50 or so is a no-brainer. So are synchros for 1st, 2nd, and prob. 3rd too, usually about $15 each. Best to find an already junked (SMS'd even) tranny for parts too, since you don't know what else you'll find wrong in there. Plus it's good to tear down a junk one first for practice.
G/L, it's fun!

Thank you Ron! One tranny is not more likely to throw a rivet than another! They all in fact do have rivets, even O2A's.
Ron, Do you know of any sources for a complete rebuild kit? Seals, gaskets, synchros, bearings and bolt kit? Also, how do you get the pinion nose bearing race out without the VW tool?

I went to my local import FLAPS (IPW here in Cincy). The owner can get everthing I need. I would try Potterman (www.parts4vws.com) or Adirondak. If no luck, try BSI Racing (sorry no link off the top of my head) in Florida.
Now, AFA the pinion race...what, do you want me to give up my secrets??? Seriously, the trick here (and for the diff bearing races) is to pop the case half in a gas grill at maybe 350* - 400* for about 5 minutes. If you put the case half in face-down, the races will be sitting on the grate. If not, tap the hot case half flat on your toolbench top. Works like a charm!
Good luck, let me know if I can help any more!

Re: tranny woes (Ron P)

Ron, you are awesome! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif I can now do a FULL rebuild!!! I thought about heating the case locally with a torch but your method sounds much easier. But I don't understand why it would work on the diff also. The diff is steel so it will expand at the same rate as the race. Is it a timing thing?
About suppliers, I've gotten alot of my tranny stuff from BSI and once from VL when I actually got him on the phone. Just wondered if I get everything for one price. I guess I don't like to add...

Re: tranny woes (QB)

The diff bearing races press into the case just like the pinion bearing race. Works wonderfully - just did it again about 1 hour ago!
AFA my being awesome, I don't know...but *wonderful* maybe...leastways my wife says so....
