My 2001.5 passat will randomly hesitate, then jerk you back in your seat. This happens when driving at steady speeds or accellerating, whether cold or warm?

I'm finally taking the car in for this problem in a couple weeks (I didn't have time for the techs to look at it during the 5k mile service). People who've seen this problem go away thank the following reasons:
1) replace valve body (theory being a sticking valve)
2) replace transmission chip (theory being it's defective)
3) driver adapts (theory being 'mind over matter')
4) car adapts (really this should be 'other')
So, complain about it to your dealership service dep't, but also see if it goes away by the grace of reason 3 or 4 above. Try a search in the B5 forum on "thump", "jerk", "driveline", and oter key words in this post for other people's experiences.
