Transmission Opinions plz

well.. my reverse is damaged. ticks
would u... ho hum... 1.. replace it with ie used one
or 2.. take it apart and fix reverse..
1 i know where my tranny has been i know it all works good cept for reverse.
2. who knows what condition a used one will be in
opinions pls?
also the tranny i have now on hills like on side on hills driving horitontally sideways when i try and shift its very hard to get it into gear, even shifting on a turn in town as im turning and shift into second it aint smoothe kinda
maybe other things inside are messed?

This happens to a lot of people. He's just asking a question man.
I think you will just have to live with it Tbird, at least thats the best thing to do. My friend has an 88 Jetta Carat with 180k on it and a ticking reverse, it just keeps going, yet sounds terrible whenever he backs up. The only thing you might want to worry about is a broken off tooth rolling around in the transmission case. That could cause issues.

Yeah, a little ticking isn't as bad as some other problems. Change the tranny fluid if you haven't recently, and keep driving on it. If it seems to get worse, then maybe you can consider another tranny.

Of course, I know about Tbird and I've been here less time than either of you.

I'm guessing he's just one of those softies who wonders, "Can't we all just get along?"

Tbird's gotten way better lately, and he did finally replace those CVs.

Alan, this really comes down to a matter of trusting your mechanic really.
Do you feel that your mechanic will put a trustworthy transmission in your car? Do you feel that his labour rates for rebuilding your tranny will be fair?

if you do get it replaced, do some sweet ass powershifts without the clutch and see how long it'll last before you break it, go all fast and furious in it, racing lawn mowers and moped's

a used tranny condition depend on the driver and how hard they drives...a fairly new tranny can be in a worste shape if the driver races and pour huge amouns of power upon it...rebuilding can be better to da point that u know its new gears but it also depend on the mechanic's work quality...

I would have your tranny rebuild. Sounds like ur synchros are going and your tranny could use a rebuild. While your mech is in the tranny, have him put the bolt kit in to prevent the fabled rivot explosion.

When I bought my Jetta it had this problem, a gear tooth got chipped off and it made a horrible knocking sound when in reverse. i just got sick of it and heard too many stories of people getting stuck into gear, or that loose tooth f*ingup the rest of the tranny.
I just replcaced mine a few weeks ago. Me and a buddy did it ourselves, it only took 2-3 days. i bought a used tranny, and replaced all the seals, bearings, and Redline tranny fluid. It was well worth it!
You will be extremely happy to not haveto worry about that reverse gear every time you put it into that gear.
At least i feel it is worth replacing. it didn't cost much, tranny=$150 new seals, bolts, fluid and bearings=$100
Getting a used tranny is easier and maybe cheaper than rebuilding your own, but it is up to you. I just recommend fixing it soon, just in case

Yea i've heard everything tbird has said (well most everything). I've heard the "stories"

I just didnt think that 16v needed to jump all over him when he asked a question just because he's Tbird. Uh, guess i was just giving him the benefit of the doubt...
But now that i look back on it...
