Check out http://www.tirerack.com
You can choose your car (2002 GTI in your case) and go through all of the wheel selections...and they actually apply them to the car.
You can see what each will look like.
Good luck.

why are you worried about the tire replacements? Sumitomo HTR ZII tires for the 17" wheels are only $100 per, and they are Z rated

Kuhmo Ecsta Supra's are also only $100 per

Goodyear runflats are only $113

Get the cheapest thing you can get, then sell the wheels and get whatever aftermarket wheel you want http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Personally, I like the look of the VW five-spoke 17's.
You'll spend a lot more than $400 for aftermarket wheels and tires, even with a cheap set (Although it is true you could offset the price by selling the old wheels).
Let us know what you go with.

16's, 17's really heavy, and you can spend the 400 saved on some Potenza S-03's for your 16's. On my GTI the 15's are winter/race wheels come summer and I'm getting 16" Bravo's with Potenza's as everyday shoes in the spring/summer, I also don't really care to much about hwo my car looks, I'm obsessed with weight asvigns and the 16's are lighter

18+ is usually heavy, unless you buy $$$ wheels
17s, even cheap ones, are decently light
Most 16s aren't as wide as I would like
So..I say go for 17s
