I just got a Franco industries self adjusting cam gear from a friend, and I'm trying to setup it up for my 266 cam. The cam gear can self vary from +7/-3 degrees timing or +10/0 degrees. I remember seeing dyno charts a while back of the 266 at different timing settings, but I can't seem to find them anymore. So what I'm looking to find out is if the 266 makes more peak hp with 0 degrees retard or with -3 degrees. Thanks for any info.

Re: Tuning self-adjusting cam gear with TT266 cam (Fast2.0L)

I used to have my Dyno hosted at Photopoint, but it's gone. I've got the 266 with the cam gear.
Basically, it works out like this, without looking at mine I can't quite remember, except that at +3 you're going to have better horsepower down low, and more torque. That's how mine is set up currently. If I can get it hosted, I'd post the graph.

Re: Tuning self-adjusting cam gear with TT266 cam (MkIII)

I guess I am not that familiar with how this works. I've heard of these but never seen one in real life...
So my question is, if it's self-adjusting, why do you need to set it? Shouldn't it constantly be adjusting itself to whatever variables are going on with your motor at the time? Or am I not understand the principles behind how this thing operates?
Thanks in advance for any clarification.

You know, I guess I totally glossed over what he said about it being "Self Adjusting" so basically what I said only applies to a Adjustable Cam Gear.
Sorry about that, my reading comprehension has gone down the bucket since I left college.

WOW thats the coolest cam gear i've ever seen! Not to bring up honda but its like VTEC for the dub. Does it really work? Because it sure beats the hell out of my TT cam gear. Anyone have it?

I know...it does sound good in theory. I would definitely like to try one if they are still in business. The site was last updated in 1997.
Please keep us posted with your views on it's performance. Dyno runs too, if you would...

Well the theory is right... back in the early 90's Porsche made something like this. But as to how much you will really gain is my question. I emailed the company and will tell you what happens. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

If that thing works the way I think it does, you won't get much of an increase in peak power or torque but you'll get a broader power band, that should be very nice, I'd love to try one.

Re: Tuning self-adjusting cam gear with TT266 cam (8v-inside)

I just got the cam gear installed today. It makes a night and day difference down low. The car pulls right away at 1500 rpm and it's considerably quicker. I have the gear set to +7/-3 and the cam seems to have quite a bit more top end around 5000rpm but I don't know if there's an actually any hp increase. I think with a larger cam and the gear set +10/0 that it would work even better. The gear is a little bit noisy too at 2000rpm and you can't run it with the plastic timing belt cover but other than that well worth the 100bucks I got it for.

Yeah it's definitely something I'd recommend. The price new is a little steep at $300 but I think it's a mod that you could use later even with forced induction. If you call the phone number on their website they can hook you up. It's my understanding you can get 2 different settings machined on any gear, mine had the +7/-3 and +10/0 but my friend with a G60 has some different settings.

Just out of curiousity, what kind of cover would you recommend? This seems like the kind of gear I am looking for http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

You could probably cut a big enough hole to clear the gear if it's too thick, but if the overall diameter is bigger then I'm not sure what you'd do.

Re: Tuning self-adjusting cam gear with TT266 cam (DomozitoLK)

Yeah a hole like that would work perfectly. Actually it may only need a hole the size of the bolt as that's all that seems to stick out too far. I'm going to try and get a spare cover before I try doing it to mine.

Re: Tuning self-adjusting cam gear with TT266 cam (Fast2.0L)

This is a great idea. Now, I do have three questions relating to it.
1. Since this self-adjusting Cam Gear is a mechanical device, how long would it be before the springs begin to wear down? So I guess my question is, how long of a life span will this product have?
2. From what I saw, there were no power increases in the 6000 RPM range, even using a high deg. cam like a 276. Would this be due to the testing been done on older, un-tuned (chip wise) engines? or would it be due to the timing?
3. Would a performance ECU have any possitive or negative effect when using this Cam Gear?
8v-inside: since you've been talking to the company, you should have them use you as a test/marketing mule and get some before/after dyno runs using their Cam Gear. Maybe get the product and dyno runs for free
because I would love to see more info (before/after dynos) from newer engines.
