I am seriously considering rebuilding my engine and putting a turbo on it. The problem is I don't know if its even worth it. Has anyone on the Tex done it? If so, what turbo did you put on your car? And how much hp did you get out of it? I am debating whether or not to put a turbo on my 16v or to swap for a 1.8t. What would be the best choice? Thanks

I couldn't say what the best choice would be without knowing your budget, abilities, and goals for power and such. I am building a 16vT right now and know of at least 4 others on the Tex. I'm sure there's more, though. I know of at least one that run in the 11s.
What exactly are you looking to get out of it? I'm using a t3/t4... Forged pistons, the works...

Matrix engineering has a kit out for the 2 liter 16v motronic.....i've heard mixed reviews on it...makes about 200 hp at the crank - and supposedly a 250 hp stage 2 kit is in the works.....so yeah it has been done.......

Actually, now that you reminded me, there's a guy in the 16v and FI forum selling a motor with the matrix kit that he just had installed. I think he got whacked by a trash truck. Motor's got 500 miles on it! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Vdubturbo, my budget is around 8-10k for turboing and rebuilding the engine. I am hoping to get a little about 200hp out of a stage 1 turbo. I'm not to familiar with the turbo lingo, what does the t3/t4 turbo mean? What company turbo did u use? If I could get mine to run 11s it would be awesome! Thanks for all of the input guys.

There was a black 16v Mk2 GTi turbo running at waterfest. He custom made his piping and manifolds. It was fast and had lots of power. He disabled the vehicle on one of his runs- had the Lexan windows tinted and some other stuff. "Got Jesus" on the back window and a guy holding a sword or something. Anyone know the car I am talking about? You can get gobs of power out of the 16v engine with a turbo- its slightly exotic too, so its nice.

With my budget, what do you think I could get out of a rebuilt 16V engine? I am looking to get the most hp out of it that I can with the money available. Any advice on what parts I should get? If so, what companies? Thanks.

Well it all depends you see! For about 8-10 G's you can have a 1.8T swapped but will it have everything you want? See if you did that swap and replaced the Stock Turbo for a T3/T4, you'd want a new intercooler, piping etc, you might even need a stand alone engine management system which can cost like 2G's right there, then you still need time on the Dyno to Fine tune it figure another $500 at least to get a basic map to work off.
Either way now that you have power lets say conservatively 300HP (not hard to do with the proper fuel management and a t3/4) you need to be able to control it, so you now you want bigger brakes, suspension, clutch, Quaife maybe even a strenghtned tranny. Quaife will be about 800-900 bucks, clutch about $400-500 bucks, etc. It all adds up real fast. At least with a 1.8T swap you will more than likely have a "NEW" or low mileage engine.
if you rebuild your engine, you will look at having to beef up what you have now, rebuild it, then add a turbo t3/4 can be had for around $600 to $800 bucks, if you get an external wastegate you will be out another $400 bucks at least, you'll need a custom exhaust manifold, intercooler can run ya about $800 and up, custom intercooling pipes, custom (at least) 2.5 inch Down pipe, 2.5 inch cat and cat back. strenghtned tranny, Quaife, new clutch, suspension, stronger motormounts, engine management etc, either way it will cost ya.
But I think 10G's to make your 16V scream can be a good start if you don't have to pay labor (DIY).
or you can drop off your car at http://www.adrenalinmotorsport.com/ and pay $1050 and get:
This is taken from their website
Our 1.8T conversion includes the following:
Transverse Audi 1.8T Motor not Volkswagen
ECU upgrade 1Bar chip APR
Adrenalin Custom Big Bore Throttle Body
Adrenalin Custom 2.5" T-304 stainless downpipe
Adrenalin Custom Cat-Back stainless exhaust w/Brullen stainless muffler
Dyno Sheet for your car
You'll probably end up with about 190ish WHP, trust me, not something to be ashamed about. They did not do my car but it sure is fun to drive.
And your motor is new

Re: Turbo a 16v? Has anyone done it? (1.8T A2)

Thanks for all of the input guys. 1.8TA2, thanks for the extensive input with all of the stuff I would need to do for either application, 1.8T or rebuilt 16V. I'm still trying to figure out what I would like to do. First, I need to find the price for all parts needed and the labor that it would prolly cost. I will do alot of internet searching. It seems to me like the 1.8T would be a better option, but I'm not definite on that yet. I'll let u guys know what I decide to do. Thanks again for the input. See ya.

Right, thanks for catching that!
1050 would be nice huh, lol, if that were the case I'd have three more MK II 1.8T's
