Turbo for a Rabbit - Questions

1008 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  gtibunny8v
My little bro wants to slap a junkyard turbo setup on his 4-door Rabbit. He will be getting my 1.8L GTi engine when I swap in my 3A. Just looking for some information so he can start planning before the swap date.
- What turbo can I steal from j-yard cars?
- What do I need to do to the engine to make this thing work?
- What sort of things do I have to be wary of (fuel, heat, etc.)?
- What's the difference between the Garrett T3 and T4 turbos?
- What head work should I do? Mild clean up job?
- What cam should I run? G-grind?
- Any good sites to look at for information?
I have the shopping list for the j-yard turbo setup off of Hardcore VW. All in all, I know diddly squat about turbos and so does he. We've been into NA cars all our lives. Sorry if this post is sort of vaque, but I don't really know what kind of questions to ask. Thanks for your help.

Re: Turbo for a Rabbit - Questions (67vwbug)

get a turbo off a saab 9000 as long as it is a garrett turbo. for the manifold i have heard rumors that the cabriolet manifold can be cut to mount a turbo to it-(how i don't know) and focus on the turbo t3-- for a couple reasons-- t4 is WAY too big for the 1.8 rabbit. and besides it's harder to find a t4 in the bone yard-- check out this pic-- it is a comparison between a garrett t3(small turbo) and the t3-t4 which has a compressor side off a t4 turbo-
hope this helps you a bit--p.--- the small turbo is aboneyard piece off a 1985 ford turbocoupe

Alright. Cool. I'll keep an eye out.
More questions added up top.
Re: Turbo for a Rabbit - Questions (67vwbug)

- What turbo can I steal from j-yard cars? Sabb 900
- What do I need to do to the engine to make this thing work? nothing
- What sort of things do I have to be wary of (fuel, heat, etc.)? depends on how much boost
- What's the difference between the Garrett T3 and T4 turbos? T4 is Larger, stay with a T3 for your setup or maybe even go T3/T4
- What head work should I do? Mild clean up job? Get a valve job, yes mild clean up, and they will check to see if everything is straight!
- What cam should I run? G-grind? Stock is fine, save your "extras" $$ for fueling
- Any good sites to look at for information? Telephone calls to ATP or Matrix are the best!

Good luck

Re: Turbo for a Rabbit - Questions (67vwbug)

I am going to be running a Renault Fuego turbo with the intercooler all on a stock 3A (10.5:1) motor with 7-8 lbs of boost with 108 CAM2 race fuel also exauhst size is very important remeber back pressure is evil and so is extreme heat and detonation. This setup is good for 30-40 hp because of the high comp detonation is the enemy. Remember about high oct gas depending on boost and timing. Do not forget to get head studs too and a new head gasket. Good Luck

Re: Turbo for a Rabbit - Questions (67vwbug)

Links in my sig might help You.
Go for the 81mm bore block; so You can use steel headgaskets from g60/tdi; Audi pistons and rods etc.
Also the bigger fuel distributor could be useful If higher hp's are wanted. Bigger dists from BMW 6-cyl, Audi 5-cyl, Porsche 6-cyl, Volvo turbos etc. Bigger dist is hexagonal (smaller: square) With a small one You'll need to be satisfied for <200hp; with bigger one You can have up to 300hp.
Use all the injector ports to get a full advantage of the higher capacity of the bigger dist.

Re: Turbo for a Rabbit - Questions (jynssi)

Is a Garrett T-25 turbo with internal wastegate any good?
What about a KKK Audi 5000 turbo?
How about the Audi 5000 intercooler?
Thanks.
Re: Turbo for a Rabbit - Questions (67vwbug)

The Audi 5000 intercooler is probaly one of the best you can find in a j-yard next to a starion intercooler.
